Green Turf & Billie Blue – New at Hyatt Field

August 13th, 2014 by

imageHyatt Field has moved into being one of the “top-of-the-line” football stadiums in the state, with its new Pro-Grass Turf,

overlaying a one inch bed of sand, supported by 5 inch thick year of grade 57 rock.

Another improvement, made noticeable by the concrete field borders, is that the field is now level. In the past it sloped from 2 to 3 foot downhill, The south end.

Of course, last but not least, drive by and see the beauty of the new turf, especially compared to the “Billie Blue” end zones.

Field construction should be completed in time for the first home game, with the new fieldhouse becoming available in September.

  1. Unbelievable says:

Is too bad we aren’t the top school in academics. I wonder how many kids are actually going to make it to college on their football skills. You would think that we were one of the richest little towns in America by our sports facilities. Check how many classes of remedial English and Math classes are taught at UAM for incoming freshman.I will certainly remember this when Monticello Schools ask for a millage increase.

  2. tax payer says:

And it only cost $1,000,000. If it lasts 10 years that’s only $20,000 per game.

  3. carol caldwell says:

    What a waste of money.

  4. Smoke says:

I think it looks awesome and is going to be awesome!!!
    Go billies!!!!!

  5. Wondering says:

Great! Now we have a nice new field with EXTREMELY limited parking! Since the school board and Mr. Harper were determined to spend the money for “upgrades” and not education, teacher raises, etc, I wonder why they would not improve parking before a field?
It would have been better to move the field closer to the schools and existing field house. If they had been blessed with the vision to see forward they would have purchased the land where Second Baptist is now. Could have solved the parking by using existing school parking lot.
Oh well, just another example of our great leadership spending money on fruitless endeavors. I knew this would be coming after seeing Mr. Harper and school board member admiring the turf field after our team got creamed two years ago.
Just had to wait a while so it would all fall into place. Glad our team is still practicing on the rock and grass practice field. That will help us get ready to play on turf! How long until Mr. Harper and school board decide to turf it too? Maybe they bought too much and can get it spread out on practice field using our OEC students to install? That would save money and give an education at same time!

  6. both of you are WRONG!! says:

The state granted money to the school to do upgrades. Not 1 penny of tax payers money is being spent on the remodel. As for the unbelievable, they have spent $1,000 of dollars on new stuff for academics. Bet you didn’t know they are building a new Tech Support facility that will also train computer/tech students. Wish you people would know the FACTS before you post.

  7. ward 2 says:

I agree, remedial courses are a joke. Maybe go back for a 5th year of high school instead. Then they could play football longer.

  8. NAN CARTER says:

I THINK THE FIELD LOOKS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! THOSE MEN HAVE REALLY DEDICATED THENSELVES TO DOING THIS JOB AND GETTING IT DONE ON TIME. OUR TEAM REALLY DESERVES THIS AND I KNOW THAT IT COSTS ALOT, BUT LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE, IT’S GONNA MAKE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT IN OUR FANTASTIC TEAM!!! GO BILLIES!!!

  9. Just trying to do better says:

Both of you are wrong…..Did not do taxpayer money? Where do you think the money comes from the state? So we just spent all this money and you honestly think the tax payers did not spend a dime. That is who the state is, and the tax payers are the Federal Government, it might have worked all the way back to China……We are a poor state and the Southeast part is probably the poorest part of the state. The teachers are having a hard time even paying for their insurance, and we just took on 220,000 new medicaid patients for insurance, but it is only the state that has to pick up the tab for this on the backs of taxpayers. I don’t know where you get your facts, but they certainly are not the facts that I read. Everyone is having a hard time, and we sure need a better educational system. When the state and the federal govt. see where our priorities are, they might not be so eager to give us grants in the future. Property taxes have gone up and that causes our insurance to go up on our houses. I did not have to look that fact up because I know first hand because I have to pay more on property tax and house insurance.

all the haters are lumberjack fans

  11. Weevilman says:

    Jennifer.

    Beat Warren. Then talk.

  12. Wondering says:

    Jennifer,
You are wrong! I am an alumni of Monticello High School, not a Lumberjack fan as you stated. I realize the funds came from grants but it is still hard to understand that sports get priority over education.
Our school has been and still is “school improvement” yet the funds go towards sports. I know there was a comment about a new tech room but even still, is that going to raise test scores? How will this million dollar field improve math and English scores?
Sadly, money overrides everything. Education does not bring in money like sports especially football. If the board and Mr. Harper think the new field will help in education, teacher raises, school improvement, etc, they are sadly mistaken. Have jobs been created by putting in turf? Will businesses flock to Monticello because of a turf field? NO! But if the school system was as great as our turf field businesses might be drawn to Monticello. But we will not determine that any time soon.
