Governor to Dedicate UAM Student Success Center & Police Station, September 11
September 5th, 2018 by iPhoneGovernor Asa Hutchinson will formally dedicate the recently-completed Student Success Center and University Police Station at the University of Arkansas at Monticello during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on campus next Tuesday (September 11) at 2 p.m.
Other guests scheduled to attend include UA System President Donald Bobbitt.
The Student Success Center officially opened in August in time for the start of the 2018 fall semester. The two-story structure contains 35,300 square feet of interior space with an additional 1,900 square feet of exterior space for the entrances and an outdoor dining area. The $8.5 million structure, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, is the centerpiece of Chancellor Karla Hughes’ long-term goal to make UAM a model open enrollment university.
In constructing a Student Success Center, UAM is following a nationwide trend in higher education to consolidate vital student services under one roof. “It’s a proven strategy across the country that facilities like this improve student services from entry to exit,” said Hughes.
The new facility houses suites of offices and meeting rooms for admissions and enrollment services, orientation, retention, academic advising, career counseling and testing, tutoring and developmental education.
There are also temporary offices for the cashier, financial aid, housing and the registrar to be used primarily during the early days of each semester to provide a one-stop shop for all those services. The building also houses a new bookstore, computer labs, small meeting rooms, the chancellor’s office, and the most anticipated addition to the campus by students – a Chick-fil-A restaurant, one of the largest of its kind on a college campus in the country.
The new University Police Station, which was also completed in August, is a one-story 3,000-square-foot facility with a public lobby that serves as an information center for campus visitors. The building includes a dispatch and communications room, an officers’ room, a work room for locks, security cameras and access control equipment, an interview room, an office for the chief, an office for the lieutenant, secure storage for evidence, general storage and a training room.
“This facility has been needed for some time,” said John Kidwell, chief of University Police. “It is a tremendous upgrade from our old station and an attractive and functional addition to the campus.”
