Gas Shortage Explained
April 14th, 2021 by Joe Burgess
After a couple weeks of dealing with a local “gas shortage,” ML spoke with 2 business owners involved in local fuel sales, yesterday. One operates a local full-service gas station and the other a fuel distribution plant. Both agreed that the power outage in the Houston area, recently, shut down the refineries in that area, where most of our fuel is transported from.
This lead to reduced allotments being shipped out of the Houston refineries. Since Monticello is on the far end of the Arkansas supply route, most of the trucks and shipments were gone by the time they reached Monticello.
Since the allotment started at midnight, every morning, the fuel distributor I spoke with had his trucks in line at midnight so his supply was not affected. This means that Corner Express on Winchester Road and several outlying stations did not run out of fuel.
However most of the local station’s supply have been on and off, based on their suppliers ability to provide from the reduced allotments.
Dealers have been told that increased allotments are supposed to begin, this week, so hopefully things will be back to whatever the “new normal” is.
