MLive interviewed Crossett Mayor Scott McCormick, getting an update on the GP plywood mill fire.

Mayor McCormick indicated that the fire most likely started from a cutting torch during the demolition of the former mill, although that has yet to be confirmed.

To the best of his knowledge, no one was injured Or has been reported missing, even though workers were inside the building at the time of the first explosion.

Other divisions of the GP Crossett Mill are still in operation, this afternoon.

During the conversation, he did confirm that businesses located on Highway 82 between the truck route in Cedar Street were evacuated. Residents nearby were advised to remain inside their homes, to avoid any toxic fumes that may be caused by asbestos or various forms of plastic.

The mayor did confirm that the fire has been contained to the former plywood facility, and firefighters are still battling hotspots and gaining ground against the flames.

Mayor McCormick especially wanted to express his appreciation to all of the surrounding first responders, both law-enforcement and firemen who came to assist Crossett during the crisis.

Good work, Joe. Wonder if it affected the cemetery behind the mill. I am thankful the mill was not still open and full of workers at this time.
