Early Morning Wreck Involving Alcohol and Student
April 20th, 2008 by Joe BurgessAround 1 a.m., Sunday morning, law enforcement officers on patrol on Old Warren Road, noticed a downed power pole near the running track just east of Monticello High School.
Upon entering the school’s parking lot, a wrecked GMC truck was found (see photo).
The student in question was taken to the County Detention Facility for a BAC test.
Witnesses at the scene indicated that he had been drinking, and was attempting to enter the school’s “safe prom”, which is being provided to prevent drinking and driving.
The truck left the scene of the wreck, and was parked near the area where last week’s “DWI Wreck Re-enactment” was held.
The student’s mom told MonticelloLive, “the last thing we told him before he left was don’t be drinking and driving.”

It is really sad when some kid drinks on prom night. There is a lesson here and I hope they learned it. I had family and friends at that prom and i could have been one of them hit instead of a lightpole
Thanks to all the law enforcement for paying attention to
this matter. It could have been a prom night we all
regreted. I also had a child at that prom as well.
Thanks to the Safe Prom parents and sponsors for all
your hard work on making last fun and safe for our guys and gals.
Almost 21 years ago, my sister Tammy and brother in-law Larry were killed on 35 due to a drunk driver. Luckily my nephew survived or did he since he did loose both parents. The Drunk driver also, died leaving behind children, family and friends. I was only 15 and do remember still thinking that even after the tragedy that I could push the limits of God’s will. I thank god that he did protect me and the others on the road in my day’s of stupidity and selfishness. As a parent and as citizen you can talk and provide all the information in the world to a person and hope that they will stay safe and make the right choices in life.
I truly hope that this teenager, others like him and Adults alike everyday from now on think of that LIGHT POLE as a person or a young family out trying to make a living or just enjoying life that is no longer here to see their child, nieces and nephew’s grow up or get married or enjoy the golden ages of their parents. As a parent now of teenagers I would much rather my child call me in the middle of the night asking for a ride home because of a wrong choice they made than a knock on the door or a phone call from the Police telling me about their wrong choice.
Young man I hope when you get your punishment you have many hours of community service, are made to watch horrible video’s of wrecks or to have to go to Little Rock and see things first hand in Critical wards. I hope you have to sit and speak to some family’s that have been through this tragedy or even meet drunk drivers who survived their mistake but lost their quality of life. And if you do really change within your heart you will go to School’s around your area share your experience of your actions and what you learned from to others in hopes of changing the mind of at least one other.
If you need help or support I will offer that to you.
Feel free to come by the Courthouse to my Office.

GOD was watching out for him. I lost my son when he was 30 due to a heart attack. I remember him coming in drunk when he was younger. It hurts a parent, but it hurts the child more if you do nothing. Mine would drink a fifth and say “MOM I ONLY HAD 2 BEERS”. He didn’t drink the last 6 years of his life, but this could of been him. I ask myself what I would have done different. FIRST… TAKE THE KEYS..TAKE HIM AND LET HIM SEE JAIL…FIND SOMEONE HE WILL LISTEN TO, AND INVITE ALL HIS FRIENDS TO GO WITH HIM…I’m talking only about what I would do with my son. A LOT OF PRAYERS HELP..Nothing will hurt you as bad as knowing you’ll never see or hear your kid again until God has his will. All things happen for the good of those who LOVE THE LORD, we just have to find the way to use what happens to us for the good. Oh yeah I would find out where he got his drink and he would go tell the law. I would rather him be a narc than dead. That’s just my opinion.
Everyone makes the wrong decisions sometimes. Im glad he is okay!
