DTF Finds Meth Lab

June 18th, 2009 by

According to Lt. Jason Akers of the Tenth Drug Task Force, a Drew County man is facing methamphetamine manufacturing and related charges after a search warrant was executed at his residence last week.

According to Akers, Task Force Agents, in a comined investigation with the Desha County Sheriff’s Department and the McGehee Police Department, executed a search warrant at the residence of Thomas Smith Jr, age 27 for methaphetamine and methaphetamine manufacturing paraphernalia and ingredients.

Pursuant to the search warrant, Agents located one pound bags of iodine, tubing, a homemade condensor and other items that were believed to contain ephedrine, empty bottles of acetone and other items believed to be used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Agents also located multiple firearms at the residence at the time of the search warrant execution.

Smith was arrested on a warrant obtained by the Task Force and charged with Simultaneous Possession of Drug and a Firearm, Manufacturing a controlled substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with the intent to manufacture. He is currently incarcerated at the Drew County Jail on a $50,000.00 bond that was set at his First Judicial Appearance.

Akers commented, ‘We appreciate the information and assistance we received from the Desha County Agencies that made this investigation possible. It is instances like this where the Task Force is most effective, as agencies in one area receive information about illegal activity in another area outside of their jurisdiction and forward that to us. This enables us to channel all of the investigative efforts towards the activity and is a win- win situation for both Drew and Desha Counties.’

Both the Drew County Sheriffs Department and the Monticello Police Department also assisted in the execution of the search warrant.

Where did this happen at, what neighborhood. I bet it did not happen around the Jordan Park area. Jordan Park, the area where so many people are against the Splash Pool because the area is so dangerous and the community would just tear it up. Jordan Park, the area where police harass individuals several times a day who are out just sitting at the park with their children because the police say they are up to no good. Jordan Park, the area where there are no sidewalks but children walk up and down the narrow streets all day long. “One of the most depressing areas of our city” someone wrote but people live and children play and have fun. I live in this area I felt that comment was very hurtful, derogatory, and just wrong.
These are the comments my area gets, but you don’t see or hear about anyone doing anything that can blow up the entire neighborhood in this area.
The city closed down Jordan Park’s pool years ago and just left it sitting there looking run down. But the people who live in the area are the ones who get blamed for the area looking run down.
I bet more kids utilize Jordan Park then any other park in the city. The run down appearance that some people speak and write about is not from the community doing it on purpose, it’s from normal wear and tear from utilizing it. Hey if the city need volunteers tell me where the list is at and I daily. Please let me know.
