Drew County EHC Awards Academic Scholarships
November 24th, 2020 by SubmittedIn a typical year, Drew County Extension Homemakers Clubs will award either a local graduating senior entering UAM or student currently studying there an academic scholarship, but 2020 has not been a typical year. In late spring when the EHC Scholarship Committee called for applications, local students had already been sent home to learn remotely. They struggled to compile the necessary documents and signatures which EHC requires for the scholarship application, and EHC extended their deadline to encourage students to complete the applications.
In the end, EHC received the strongest group of applications the scholarship committee has ever seen. The number of bright and promising young people in our community presented an exciting challenge. Choosing just one from among them to receive the scholarship seemed an impossible task. The committee could see that the viral pandemic has resulted in ever-growing monetary need among the families of young people seeking an education.
The EHC Scholarship Committee determined that increased opportunity should be met by increased generosity. They petitioned the EHC Executive Council to give more than one scholarship. Financial donations from EHC members funded this goal, and EHC decided to award three deserving scholars recognition and assistance for the academic year.
Braden Taylor, a senior English major, was awarded the first place scholarship of $1000. Bree-Anne Lanthrip was also recognized. She is a senior History and Political Science double major who was awarded the second place scholarship of $500. Trenton Eubanks, a freshman Mathematics major, was awarded the third place scholarship of $250.
Each of the students receives his or her award in two payments. The students present EHC with proof of enrollment in UAM courses for the fall semester, and the first part of their scholarship is applied to their outstanding balance at the university. When they provide proof of enrollment for the spring 2021 semester in January, the second part of their funding will be released.
