Drew Central Senior Named as National Merit Scholarship Finalist
March 1st, 2013 by Sarah SpencerJessica Wishard, a senior at Drew Central High School, received recognition at their recent school board meeting for advancing to finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program of 2013. She was awarded a certificate by Ms. Melissa Vincent, Principal of the high school.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is a competition for academic recognition and college scholarships. While winning a National Merit Scholarship would be a great accomplishment, even advancing to the level of finalist is prestigious and counts highly with college admissions staff.
Winners of the scholarships are selected based on several criteria. The student’s academic record, PSAT and SAT scores, extracurricular and leadership experiences are all taken into consideration. The student must submit an essay, along with recommendations from the student’s school. The school’s curricula and grading system, are also factors. About one half of the finalists are named Merit Scholars and receive scholarships. The winners will be notified beginning in March.
