Drew Central Fourth Graders Read Novel “Wonder”
December 6th, 2017 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central fourth graders read a moving modern classic written by R.J.Palacio. The novel titled “Wonder” is about a boy named Auggie Pullman who was born with a facial difference that prevented him from going to mainstream school-until now. Auggie is an ordinary kid with an extraordinary face. The books is told from the diferent characters perspectives which was perfect for class discussions. Students researched the cause of Treacher Collins Syndrome.
The lyrics to the song “Wonder” by Natalie Merchant was used for fluency and annotation of figuative language. The students’ favorite quote from the book was “What this world needs is a new kind of army- The Army of Kind!” by Cleveland Amory. Once the novel study was complete, students wore matching t-shirts “CHOOSE KIND” and saw the movie Wonder at Malco Cinema. Drew Central fourth graders would like to pass along a precept they learned from the book: “When given the choice between being right or being kind, CHOOSE KIND.”
