Drew Central Fourth Graders Play Detective to Reveal “Who Was Anne Frank?”
May 25th, 2023 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central fourth graders started the investigation by thinking about these questions “Who was Anne Frank?” and “How do we find out?” While reading excerpts from her diary and reading Ann Abramson’s book “Who Was Anne Frank?” students responded in their diaries to various prompts. Working in teams, students created a timeline of Anne’s life and a timeline of the world 1918-1960 by analyzing what was important from the text.
Students were engaged with their partner when taking a virtual tour of the hideout or the Secret Annex as it was called. Each room in the tour is a replica of the hideout as it looked when Anne was in hiding. This unit was the perfect springboard for exploring the effects of supply and demand. During Anne’s time in hiding, food and resources were scarce which drove prices up. The unit ended by asking students to respond to this quote by John Keating, “When you read, don’t just consider what the author thinks, consider what you think.”
