Drew Central Fourth Graders Participate in Program Celebrating Its 25th Year
April 12th, 2023 by Drew Central SchoolsThe Monticello Rotary Club members are leaders in the community and serve as role models for students. Each week, members read a book to students and students interview the members using questions they wrote in advance. In addition, students received their own copy of THE BFG by Roald Dahl to explore examples of a master writer using figurative language techniques studied this year. Books were a gift from a member, Dr. Louis James.
“I felt compelled to share with the citizens of Monticello just how fortunate I feel we are to live in a town where business leaders graciously give their time and support to our children. I say our children because I do believe it is all of our responsibility to nurture and support children in our community,” said Eva Arrington, fourth grade teacher.
The Monticello Rotary Club members have volunteered in the book club she started 25 years ago.
In the past, members have been a part of book discussions, Literature Circles, Dr. Seuss Bustin’ Loose and Read Party, Where the Wild Things Are in Fourth Grade, and read a book aloud with show and tell.
“I want to share a passage from Mister Rogers’ book that I feel explains how I feel about each member,” stated Arrington.
“When I was very young, most of my childhood heroes wore capes, flew through the air, or picked up buildings with one arm. They were spectacular and got a lot of attention. But as I grew, my heroes changed, so that now I can honestly say that anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me.” Mister Rogers
“The Monticello Rotary Club members support our school, and each of them is a hero to my students!” said Arrington.
