Drew Central Fourth Graders Make Marble Soup
December 13th, 2012 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central 4th Graders held an Estimation and Measurement Day Celebration.
The activities were planned to allow students to explore math concepts with hands-on. Students rotated throughout the classroom which gave each a chance to explore every concept. One activity was “Marble Soup”. Students at this station met the soup chef, teacher Eva Arrington, and made marble soup.
Students placed marbles in a measuring cup and filled it with water to the 1-cup mark. Each student estimated the amount of water in the soup as fractions of a cup. To verify estimates, students poured the water through a strainer into a second 1-cup measuring cup.
The new Common Core State Standards were written to give students the opportunity for deeper understanding of math concepts.
