Drew Central 4th Graders Hold Museum Grand Opening
May 21st, 2019 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central fourth grade students held a Hana’s Suitcase Museum grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. The students gave tours to students and the public. Adult guests were asked to give the fourth graders feedback to this question “What feelings did you experience when walking through the museum?”
Fourth graders studied the events of Hana Brady’s life in Czechoslovakia and Anne Frank’s life in Holland during World War II. The book Hana’s Suitcase was sparked by Japanese students and their teacher wanting to learn more about the girl whose suitcase was sent to their school as an artifact. After much research, the Japanese students found out about the history of Hana Brady and what happened to her in Auschwitz. After reading Hana’s Suitcase, the fourth graders, studied excerpts from the book Anne Frank, the Diary of a Young Girl. This allowed students to compare and contrast the two perspectives (a particular way of viewing things that depends on one’s experience and personality.)
The students worked with partners to conduct short research projects that built on knowledge through investigations of different aspects of a topic and provided a list of sources. In addition, they created a historical chronological sequence of related events.
