Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association July Meeting Notes
August 22nd, 2024 by Club OfficerOn Thursday July, 18th the Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met at the UAM Agriculture Building. The delicious hamburger steak supper was sponsored by Union Bank. The meal was blessed by President Jason Cater and the meeting followed supper. Joshua Moffett, DVM came to talk to the association about the new EID tag rules. After November 5th, 2024 all animals moving across state lines must have an EID tag. This includes sexually intact animals over 18 months of age, all dairy cattle, and any animals used for exhibition purposes. Cattle who currently have metal tags will be grandfathered in. Moffett also touched on the developments of Theileria Orientalis. Theileria is a protozoa that is transmitted by the Asian Longhorn Tick. He recommended multiple ways to mitigate ticks in cattle herds.
Following the speaker, scholarships were awarded. This year the Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association awarded six scholarships. Carly Lloyd, Sam Napier, Annalee Gibson, Jaci Gibson, Meghan Stephen’s, and Grant Kilpatrick each received a scholarship. We appreciate all of those who bought desserts and donated money at our scholarship auction. Jason Cater adjourned the meeting. Our next meeting will be Thursday August, 15th at the UAM Agriculture building.
