Desha/Drew County Cattleman’s Association February Meeting Notes
April 4th, 2024 by Club OfficerThe Desha/ Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met on Thursday February, 15 in the UAM Agriculture Building. The meeting began at 6:30 pm with the blessing of a delicious Barbecue supper with all the trimmings by President Jason Cater. A special thanks to Cater Veterinary Service for sponsoring the meal. Following the meal members were reminded to sign up for the Area 5 Spring Conference, which will take place on March 21st at the Drew County Fairgrounds.
The meetings business included the decision to donate $250 to the UAM Alumni Association’s Scholarship fund. This month’s speaker was a Beef Cattle Consultant, Dr. Nevil Speer with Turkey Track Consulting. Through his speaking events and column in Drovers Magazine, Dr. Speer gives advice on the best ways for producers to navigate the cattle market and make the most of their operation. He encouraged producers to take advantage of good markets, and to continue to look for ways to strengthen their operations. Before the meeting was called to an end Paul Shepard shared some information about the RIPE Program. It is a Conservation District led program available to producers offering grants to help support climate smart agricultural practices. The meeting was released by President Jason Cater.
