Desha/Drew Cattleme’s Meeting Notes For September 2024
October 21st, 2024 by Club OfficerThe Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met at the UAM Agriculture Building on Thursday, September 19. The meeting started at 7:00 pm with a good old barbeque supper sponsored by Drew Farm Supply and Bradley County Livestock Barn.
President Jason Cater blessed the meal. Dr. James Mitchell was our Speaker. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the University of Arkansas and an extension livestock economist with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. He talked about the seasonal changes of the market and reminded producers that it was not a reason for concern. However he did say that with 2024 being an election year some different things could happen.
Dr. Mitchell also said that the rebuilding of the herd is not likely to come for another two to three years. On a good note he did say that while the number of cattle being slaughtered has decreased the United States has been able to maintain our beef production. Following Dr. Mitchell, Mr. Jacob Courtney with Bradley County Livestock Barn told producers about the success the barn is having. Sales are growing and more buyers and sellers are showing up. He left the group with three pieces of advice: cut your bull calves, vaccinate your calves, and wean them for 45-60 days. On behalf of Drew Farm Supply, President Jason Cater told producers that their business was appreciated and reminded everyone to stock up on their hunting supplies. The meeting was then adjourned.
