Desha-Drew Cattlemen’s Meeting Report For July 2023
August 3rd, 2023 by Club OfficerThe July 20, 2023 monthly meeting was called to order by Vice President Nita Carpenter at the Forestry and Agriculture Building at 7 PM. Nita asked Jason Cater to bless the meal provided by Commercial Bank.
This meeting is special because it announces the 2023 Scholarship winners. Recipients of the Cattlemen’s Association Scholarship are: Cody Boatwright, Grant Kilpatrick, and Weston Cater in the amount of $1,000 each; Megan Stephens, Parker Cruce, JoAnn Meier, Tanner Cater and Lucy Pugh each received $700 each.
Dr. James L Mitchell – Livestock Economist with the University of Arkansas presented information to suggest that the current positive prices in the cattle market will continue through 2025. The primary reason is drought in cattle and hay producing areas in the U.S. Feedlot placement is at 9.38 million head vs the 8.42 million head during the 2015 year which followed the 2012 drought. This indicates that heifer retention has not begun at this time. Other factors were provided to support the continued higher prices. Plant based and laboratory grown meats were discussed. Dr. Mitchell pointed out that Lab Grown meat will be difficult to scale the production and that one contaminant will shut down production.
August 17 will be the next Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Association meeting. Hope to see you there.
