Vigil & Funeral Arrangements for Deceased Dermott Fireman

A Flashlight Vigil be held in honor of Dermott Fire Department Assistant Chief J.B. Hutton Jr. Assistant Chief Hutton passed away October 1, 2014. The vigil will be held at the Arkansas Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial, on Saturday October 4, 2014 at 8:30pm. The Arkansas Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial is located at One Capitol Mall on the State Capitol grounds in Little Rock.
J.B. Hutton, Jr., 77, of Dermott, AR passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 in the line of duty, while serving with the Dermott Volunteer Fire Department. He was born September 1, 1937 to the late J.B. Hutton, Sr. and Helen Marie Brookins Hutton. Mr. Hutton was married for 46 years to his wife, Shelby Hutton. He was a lifelong TV repairman. He moved back to Dermott in 1970 and served on the Dermott Fire Department for over 40 years and was currently the Assistant Fire Chief. Mr. Hutton was an avid coin collector and loved refurbishing antique jeeps. He loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Shelby Jean Lockhart Hutton; sons, Dave Whittenberg and his wife Susan of Conway, AR, Keith Hutton and his wife Melissa of Monticello, AR; daughters, Pam Greene of Conway, AR and Angela McBride and her husband Brent of McGehee, AR; brother, Herman Hutton of Dermott, AR; sister, Helen Ruth DenHerder of Belmont, Michigan and 9 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 5-7 pm on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee, AR. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Temple Baptist Church in Dermott, AR with Rev. Bob Franklin officiating. Burial will be held at Dermott Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dermott Fire Department, P.O. Box 371, Dermott, AR 71638 or Temple Baptist Church, P. O. Box 327, Dermott, AR 71638.

Dermott Fire Dept, assistant chief J.B. Hutton, Jr. had been a firefighter in Dermott, since the mid ’60s.
In recent years, Mr. J.B.’s duties were mainly driving the truck to fires, operating the controls, and sharing his experience with the younger firefighters on the scene.
Wednesday afternoon, the Fire Dept. was called out to a tree fire, that had spread into the woods, on HWY 165 South.
Firefighters on the scene told MLive, as the fire was almost extinguished, Mr. J.B. reached down to pick up a hose, then fell back, towards a fellow firefighter.
They performed CPR at the scene and called for an ambulance, but he passed away later at the hospital.
A friend said, “He died doing what he loved most – fighting fires.”
Mr. J.B. had many friends, including dozens of Drew County firefighters, who have worked with him through the years.

My sympathy to the family. I had a brother who was a fireman for over 30 years. In later years he drove the truck and cooked for the crew at the fire house. He passed away last Oct. The fire department drove the truck he drove to the funeral and as they left pulled on the siren. A fitting send off for a fellow fireman. May his family find peace in knowing others share their sorrow.
