DCSO Rescues Malnourished Horses

October 21st, 2015 by

image image imageAccording to Sheriff Mark Gober, a call was received about horses running loose near a busy highway; this led the responding deputy to a residence, where he observed two very malnourished horses.

A follow-up inspection was conducted and the officer observed a total of five horses, two of them were deemed “very malnourished”, while the rest were considered in “good condition.”

We  arranged for a local vet to inspect the horses and he agreed with our assessment.

The owner agreed that he would provide the horses with proper care.  He was advised that random checks would be performed. Over the next few weeks, there showed to be no change in the condition of the horses.    It was also noticed that food and water was limited to the animals.

Based on this, the sheriff’s department contacted an animal rescue service.   Gober  continued, “I arranged to have Give Me a Second Chance Equine Rescue arrive on Friday, October 16, to take the horses into their care.  The owner was advised at the property that the two horses were to be seized by the Sheriff’s Department and turned over to the rescue service.”

The owner agreed that he was unable to provide proper care for the two horses. He also was advised that although the remaining three horses would be checked periodically to insure their health is maintained.

On Saturday, Sheriff Gober took a large gate to the property, and with the help of his children, the gate was hung and several section of fence mended,  where the horses were getting out of the pasture.

The department has a concern for two other horses in other parts of the county, and are monitoring their health and care, as well.

Citizens are encouraged to call the sheriff’s department with health concerns of any animals that they think might be malnourished and/or not properly cared for.

If you are the owner of an animal that isn’t in good health, you are encouraged to contact your local veterinarian, to receive proper instructions on how to provide proper care for your animal.

Animal rescue services, many times are able to improve the condition of the horse and once good health is established families are given the opportunity to adopt the horse.

    Thanks to DCSO.

  2. Becke Williams says:

Thank you sheriff Gober and all those that reported and helped with this Rescue! The owner was neglectful, but at least gave up the animals. Good that there are rescue centers to take in these animals.
Like the article said, contact a vet, animal services if you need help
    caring for an animal.
