January 27th, 2015 by Sarah SpencerMs. Lee Ann James presented the Fall 2014 Freshman Academy Report to the Drew Central School Board at their meeting January 26.
Her report indicates that students in the program improved in three core subjects.
In Algebra 1, the failure rate dropped from 27% in Fall 2013 to 20% in Fall 2014. English 9 failure rate dropped from 8% to 2% for the same time period, and Physical Science scores improved by 4%, from an 8% failure rate in 2013 to a 4% failure rate in 2014.
Freshman Academy teachers held parent/teacher meetings with ten students enrolled in 3 core classes. Following the meetings, 9 of the students brought up their grades in at least one class, 7 improved their grades in 2 classes, and 2 brought up their grades in all three classes.
The core of the Freshman Academy is No Fail Friday. Students that do not complete or turn in weekly assignments are identified and required to do the work so that they will not have zeros in the grade book. Twenty-nine students completed their assignments on time and did not receive any disciplinary actions. They were rewarded with an afternoon trip on January 16 to see a movie.
