Curry’s Pest Control, on Hyatt St, Destroyed by Fire
April 4th, 2011 by Joe BurgessMonticello Fire Dept., along with 3 other fires, Sunday, were called to the site of a fire at Curry’s Pest Control, on N. Hyatt Street.
The building, along with the 3 pick-up trucks inside received major damage. One of the truck was backed out of the building, after the fire was brought under control.
A strong chemical smell could be detected for several hundred yards away from the burning structure.
A possible cause of the fire, currently being considered, is a nearby brush/leaf fire.

Today was just a day for fires… :( Just watched as the emergency response teams headed towards another fire. I hope everyone else learns from seeing this so that many fires can be prevented in the future. Hope everyone is ok.
Hope none of the folks on North Main were disturbed by any of the fire response units, smoke, and or fires.
The Arkansas Forestry Commission lists Drew County as having a HIGH fire danger. Why is there no burn ban?
This appears to be the second building destroyed by fire this year from unattended leaf burning. Is it not time to regulate outdoor burning in town? If not every day, then at least on days where the fire danger (and the wind) is high.
Like to say good job Monticello Fire dept. Glad to have ya’ll, even if no one ever tells you. Thanks !!!!!!!!!
BFP,write to the mayor and your city counsel person about a yr round ban.
nope didnt hear the fire trucks or see any fires all quiet on n main but thanks for asking D george yeah
BFP…it would be nice if a year round burn ban would be all it took to stop people from burning on windy days such as yesterday, but we all know it won’t. A little common sense would have prevented most of those fires. Unfortunately, we can’t ban stupid and that’s what it would take.
you can’t ban stupid.
I saw neighbors last year burning DURING the burn ban, on a windy day.
I don’t guess anyone breathed any of that smoke, did they? It would seem burning pesticide would be real nasty.
Burning is not the problem, it’s the people and their lack of intelligence doing the burning! You don’t start leaves burning then go inside to watch tv.
People are going to speed, so why do we have speed limits? Even though stupid people will burn during a burn ban, that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be some regulation of the matter.
Besides, I’m not advocating a complete burn ban. I’m just saying that we have some rules in place — like requiring a permit or, at the least, permission to burn from the fire department. That way the department could prohibit burning on windy days even when the county did not have a burn ban in place. Anyone caught violating the rules would be issued a ticket.
D George – I do appreciate your concern. I was not bothered by the noise or smoke and not everyone on North Main has the same opinion as those against the Whaley location for the fire department. I have spoken in favor of that location. In the future maybe they should be referred to as the members of the North Main Neighborhood Association. I think that is the official name of their group.
I agree with Steve Wells. It’s not the burning that’s a problem. It is the irresponsilbe people we call adults that dont pay attention. The problem is the people who leave the fires unattended and act like its small it wont go anywhere. We burn leaves alot but we live out of town but when we did live in town we kept a water hose right there and never left it. Why would anyone leave a fire and take a chance on burning down more than what was needed? What if a fire you left unattended spread to a house where not eveyone got out ok. I think banning leaf burning would be crazy but I think something does need to be done about the irresponsible people who leave their fires unattended especially when it burns down other things. Why not fine them. Drew County has fines for everything else. Why not burning down somebody’s stuff? If a fire is spread due to irresponsibility then give them a fine.
I’m just happy that no one was injured. Please everyone remember, if the wind is blowing 30 to 40 miles an hr don’t burn and if u do have 2–Dont leave it unattended! Cuz everytime u do u r putting a fire fighters life in danger and potentially taking a father or mother away from a child.
I know that we can not fix STUPID!
