County Fair “Homestead Family of the Year” & Parade Marshals Announced
June 26th, 2017 by iPhoneDwight and Joyce Wells have been selected as the Drew County Fair Homestead Family and Parade Marshals for 2017, which will be held on Tuesday of Fair Week, which will be held September 16–23.
They operate a small family farm, located on 278 W., just outside of the city limits, on the left before you get to the sports complex.
Dwight has been farming all of his life, beginning as a young man, working with his father. After marrying Joyce, they began raising vegetables for family, friends and a few customers, 35 years ago, when he worked at the highway department (AHTD), where he retired from after over 30 years.
Both have been lifelong residents of Drew County, and both graduated from Monticello High School. When asked how they met, we were told that Dwight and Joyce’s brother were friends in Jr. High.
Joyce still works as a teller at Commercial Bank, and has been there for almost 29 years.
During the day, Dwight does most of the work. When Joyce comes home in the evening, she helps with the harvesting, and also waits on customers and works on the vegetable displays. They’ve called their current location “home” for 35 years.
They’re approaching their 40th anniversary, and have two grown children, Lee and Veronica, and a granddaughter who attends UAM-CTC, studying to become an LPN.
The family attends Pilgrim Rest AME Church.
As far as hobbies, Dwight likes to hunt and fish. Joyce likes to go see the Razorbacks play basketball and baseball, when she has the opportunity.
This time of year, you will probably find their produce stand stocked with squash, cucumbers, peppers, okra, tomatoes, cabbage, beans and peas, as well as a large fan to keep you cool while y ou are selecting your items. They also raise greens in the fall.
When asked about being selected as the Fair Farm Family, Joyce responded, “I was shocked. We are small, and we’re out in the country. We weren’t expecting any attention or recognition.”
Congratulations goes out to Dwight and Joyce Wells, this year’s Fair Farm Family of the Year and parade marshals.
A small farm, that can be described as, “raising your garden, because you don’t have time to,” providing vegetables to local folks with a friendly smile and a kind word.
Now that’s a good way to represent Drew County.
