Council Approves Water Rate Increase – Update
January 20th, 2012 by Mandy MossThe Council unanimously agreed to raise water rates in order to help the City receive grants. Andrea Chambers,Manager of Monticello Water Department, addressed the issue with the Council.
“This is an attempt to help our water fund… because of our low rates we can’t get any grants. We are raising the minimum inside the city limits from $8 to $11 and outside city limits from 11.25 up to 15. Everything else is 4% across the board. I have projected revenue of 232,000 for a full year if everybody pays their bill, of course, that will never happen. – Andrea Chambers
Mayor Allen Maxwell further explained the grant issue with the Council saying that the “Federal Government… if you won’t charge at least $15 a month for your water, they will not give you a grant, because they look at it as if you’re not charging for your water, why should anybody else in the United States have to come in and give you a grant to pay for your water. They expect you to pay a minimum of $15.” –
Mayor Maxwell explained that the City is requesting the water pipes to be replaced to avoid patching old pipes in small increments, and that this will be “very expensive.” Therefore, receiving grant money is a priority to accomplish this goal.

Well here it is the rate increase to help build the Sdaie Johnson building I told you about this in an earlier reply, next it will be another tax increase because this is not enough due to the gread in our community.
Ok, another increase in the water bill? How about providing want is already being paid for “Trash Pick Two Times a Week”. That’s what each household pays for each month. However, every Monday that is taken for a holiday, and trash routes dosen’t run we don’t receive the services that are paid for. Please, City of Monticello quit STEALING!!!!!!!!!
The city council is coming up for reelection soon. Please run against them AND VOTE THEM OUT!!!! I can’t run because I live in the county even though I pay the same taxes as the citizens of Monticello and in some cases more.
I have to pay the water bill at the auto sales lot which already runs 58.00 a month w/o trash pickup.
VOTE IN A NEW COUNCIL!!!!!!!
No Trash Pickup, You know, the men that run that truck that picks your trash up, would like a day off sometimes, I mean is it that much of an problem that one day 4-5 months a year, you don’t get your trash picked up?
I haven’t lived in this community long, but I can say that my water bill here is much higher than a bigger city I lived in within this same state!

I have no problem with the folks taking off work. However the trash routes could run the next day. That is how it has been done in the past. Think about it, 2 wards of monticello are not getting their trash pick up. Thats about half of Monticello, and they are still charging for a service that we are not getting. If they aren’t going to provide the service then don’t charge us for it. I guess you must not have trash picked up on Monday or Thursday. I would hate to know that if my house caught on fire that the fire dept. wouldn’t respond due to it not being my day. I guess they just need money that they are beating us out of.
Yes, but running more than one trash route in a day, would cause the city to have to pay overtime to the trash guys, and Lord knows the Mayor hates paying that.
Well, looks like another increase, like we really need all this new stuff. Like really, has anyone got sick from the water we all have been drinking? The pipes that in use now, i am sure no has has got sick from it.. The Mayor looking for another reason to spend more tax money.. I live in the county and now, my bill will go up, like i really wanted that.. It is past due for the Mayor to leave.. Since The Mayor cowardly wouldn’t break the tie on the New fire station and cutting the funding from the Chamber of Commerce.. But he has not cut the funding to MEDC..
@Hello They actually can’t use the water rate increase money to rebuild the Sadie Johnson building, parks or anything else for that matter. If they were audited that would be illegal. They have to use the money on Water/Trash only. That would be an Excise tax and the people of the county would have to vote on that, not the city council. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excise
