City Leaf Vacum Drawing Heat from Council Members
January 10th, 2017 by iPhone
Late last year the City Council approved the purchase of a $192,928 street sweeper, that was described as being able to vacuum up the leaves from the curb sides of city streets.
It began being used in early November. Aside from being a very slow process, the leaf vacuum portion of the vehicle often out of service.
After many complaints, MLive began researching the issue and making phone calls about the intended use of the vehicle.
We were informed by experts, the vehicle is primarily a street sweeper, with a vacuum attachment that is to be used to clean gutters on the side of parking lots ( not large piles of leaves).
There is a vehicle designed specifically for commercial, full-time use as a leaf vacum, similar to the way our current apparatus was described as being able to work.
Once major difference is that the leaf vacuum has a 16 inch nozzle, compared to the 8 inch nozzle that the street sweeper has, ” which often gets clogged up when it hangs on a “small twig””.
It seems many residents will be back to burning and bagging leaves, like they have for years.

What areas will they be working in?

Great, more smoke pollution so that wew can’t even go outside. How about NO BURNING inside city limits. That’s free and the city can make money off fines!
Not sure why the leaf vacation truck is drawing so much criticism. The entire council approved the purchase. Perhaps a 192k lesson learned for them.
How wonderful to think that government is going to vacuum your yard! The truck is not designed for every citizen to sweep their leaves to the curb and let the truck pick them up. Can we get our money back? Can we pay attention to what we are throwing our money at prior to throwing it away? No, can you go buy a car a return it and get your money back, because it’s under warranty, REALLY? SMH
