City Receives $96,000 Grant
May 12th, 2023 by Joe BurgessThe City of Monticello received notice on May the 9th that the Monticello Police Department’s recent grant application for the 2023 Rural Violent Crime Reduction Grant was awarded.
The grant, which was for $96,000, will be used to purchase equipment used to extract and process digital evidence from cellular phones and tablets.
Most phones and tablets found at crime scenes are found to contain digital evidence of the crimes committed. Currently, Detectives have to send the phones off for forensic data and GPS information extraction, which can take months to get results on one phone. In one recent case that involved millions of dollars in identity theft, officers seized multiple phones that required forensic examination for vital evidence.
The equipment to be purchased with the grant funds is typically only possessed by federal and state agencies and will enable MPD to be one of the few agencies in the state who possess the in-house capability to process and use this type of evidence. Without grant funding, technologically advanced equipment such as this is typically unobtainable for most police departments.
