March 17th, 2023 by Joe BurgessA state inspection of the building discovered “spongy“ roof supports, which are located under the 1998 membrane roof.(edited)
Replacing and repairing the situation is estimated to cost between $1 million and $1.5 million. There are also likely would be other damage underneath the wet, failing roof supports.
The building was built in 1962.
In the past five years $370,000+ has been spent on the facility for maintenance.
“The cost of maintaining the building and reversing the building far exceeds its use.” – Superintendent Sandra Lanehart
The building currently houses ALE, which currently has 10 students. Middle school and high school administrators want the ALE to be moved into their buildings, for a smoother transition of teachers.
It also is home to the Boys & Girls Club, Head Start, and the HIPPY office.
Estimated cost to demolish the building is around $95,000, plus a small amount of asbestos panel panel abatement would be required.
The district will continue to own the land under and around the building.
No action was taken at the meeting, but bids will be announced, and the topic will be on next months agenda.
