City Issues Notice About Sodium Content in Water System
March 4th, 2013 by City of MonticelloThe Arkansas Department of Health and the City of Monticello hereby informs residents, especially those on low-sodium and salt-restricted diets, that they should be made aware of the relatively high levels of the sodium in the town’s drinking water so that they can take appropriate measures.
In samplings taken, sodium levels at one of the wellheads measured above 20 parts per million. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently includes sodium on its Contaminant Candidate List (CCL).
According to the EPA’s website, high levels of salt intake may be associated with hypertension in some individuals. “On the other hand, sodium levels in drinking water are usually low and unlikely to be a significant contribution to adverse health events,” according to the EPA.
