City Inherits Former National Guard Armory

May 27th, 2016 by

ArmoryMayor Zack Tucker recently accepted the keys to the former Arkansas National Guard Monticello Readiness Center located on Jordan Drive.

In January, the Arkansas National Guard announced plans to close two armories in southern Arkansas; Magnolia and Monticello.

The closure will not result in the lost of any personnel in the Monticello area. Guardsmen who operated out of the Monticello armory are currently reporting to drill at the armory in Warren.

“In the last two years, the Arkansas National Guard has closed nine Armories,” said Mayor Tucker. “Cities have re-purposed them for community centers, police stations, emergency operation centers, and even classroom space for a local college. We have several needs in our city, we just need to decide how best we can use the facility.”

Magnolia has announced plans to deed their recently acquired armory to SAU to house the college’s new engineering program.

The Mayor has announced he will be appointing a committee to review proposals for re-purposing the armory and make a recommendation on the use of the facility.

More information about special taskforce, including how to apply to serve, will be made available next week.
