Monticello City Computers Hacked in Cyber – Ransom Attempt
June 12th, 2019 by iPhoneOver the weekend, computer hackers gained access to City of Monticello water office computers and record files.
They possibly also gained access to another computer that contained recently scanned ordinances and resolutions. Original paper copies of these documents are still on file with the city.
Hackers likely got encrypted versions of customer information such as names, addresses and driver’s licenses, but since these documents were encrypted, officials are hoping they will not be able to be viewed by the culprits.
The website where water bills are paid is currently out of operation, for security reasons
The FBI and other agencies are investigating the case.
Hardware and software, as well as security systems, are being repaired, restored, and/or replaced.
According to Mayor Paige Chase, the hackers let the city know that this was an attempt to hold the information for ransom.
