Verdict Issued on Earlier Story, “City Employee Arrested for Using Water Dept. Records for Felony Theft”
May 12th, 2017 by Joe BurgessA former city employee, who used his position as a clerk in the water office to gain information about a customer and fraudulently spent approximately $1,665.89 from that customers account, was sentenced in Drew County Court, Monday.
David Knight accepted a plea bargain of one year unsupervised probation, from the court.
The charges were changed to theft of property under $1000. It was said in court that the computer fraud charge was dropped.
Deputy prosecutor Frank Spain told the court and the reason he accepted this agreement was because restitution had been made prior to the sentencing, which is very unusual.

According to Drew County Sheriff Mark Gober on Tuesday, his deputies arrested City of Monticello Employee for Abuse of Public Office (misdemeanor) and Theft of Property (felony).
It is alleged that David Knight gained access to a check in which was presented to the City of Monticello for a water bill payment back in April of 2016 and copied the banking information from the check and applied it to his personal Entergy account.
Knight who fills in at times at the Monticello Water Office continued these transactions from April through August of 2016. It is alleged that Knight applied approximately $1,665.89 against the customers business account. A series of interviews were conducted with Knight in reference to the case in which he admitted to Lt. Tim Nichols his involvement to with the case.
The case file will be submitted to the Prosecutors Office for review and formal charges.
The warrant for his arrest set his bond at $2,500.
A decision is expected to be made today regarding his employment with the City of Monticello.
In an unrelated story, Knight was also the driver of the city truck that drove into the sewer pond, Sunday.
