City Council to Discuss Acting, Appointed, Interim Mayor Situation, Tonight, 6
March 18th, 2014 by iPhoneThe Monticello City Council will meet tonight at City Hall at 6 PM.
The main topic to be decided tonight, will be filling the mayor’s seat, following the death last week of Mayor Allen Maxwell.
The council, tonight, could appoint someone to sit in the mayor’s position, either until a special election (rumored to be in June or July) could be held, or until the person elected in the November election would take office. What exactly would happen (and how), no one seems to know.
Currently City Clerk Andrea Chambers currently has “mayoral powers”.
Assistant mayor Zach Tucker has been nominated by the local Democratic Party, you take Maxwell’s position on the May and November ballots, as the Democratic candidate.
During that meeting, Democratic chairperson Delbert Farrar repeatedly mentioned Joe Rogers as a possible opposing candidate.
The Republican Party has recently advertised for a candidate to represent their party. Local analyst, Sam Wherry, redponded to their request by announcing his consideration in entering the race.
Also last week, former alderman and mayoral candidate, Thomas “Sonny ” Thornhill announced on Facebook that he was entering the mayors race.
If any of these, or someone else, or no one is appointed, we will have the story here, on MonticelloLive.com.

Just wondering. I don’t remember an election for Assistant Mayor. Have we had this position for a while and it was not filled or was Mr. Tucker appointed for a position that did not exist?
