City Council to Consider $10 Million, 1/4 Cent Sales Tax for Event Center, Tonight

October 6th, 2015 by

There will be a special called meeting of the Monticello City Council, tonight at 6 PM,  to consider passing on to city voters, a 1/4 cent sales tax issue, designed to build a 3,000 seat event center, which was declined to be put on the ballot, last Monday, by the DrewCounty Quorum Court.

The tax proposal that was presented to the quorum court last week would’ve had a 21-30 payoff, of 1/4% sales tax, which would be replacing the “other half” of the soon to be completed Library Tax.

1/4% of that tax was approved by the county to go before voters to fund improvemtnts to Drew Memrial Hospital, with the equivelant amount of $9.775,000.

this is so wrong, when u cant drive down east Jackson street for the hole in the street, and it all over the east in, they are behind money for streets in town, what going on Monticello?? the poor people is going to paid for it, in taxes. and the poor cant go out there, cause it not for the poor! I hope the council man that over the east in don’t vote for it?? if he does we need to think about it when we vote again! I know I will!!!!

  3. A.J. Hiddell says:

This city and particularly city council, has not shown the best track record when it comes to spending taxpayer money wisely. The contract and construction oversight of most of the projects undertaken in the last ten years has been what one would call laughable. A water project that due to lack of oversight is still unresolved, swimming pool that is constantly in need of repair, festivals that entertainment doesn’t bother to even show up for and on and on. I would suggest to the people of Monticello that they think long and hard before giving any more money to a city with already the highest tax rate in the state until these issues are resolved and a better pattern of management and oversight is established. And just a reminder, this facility will be built on the college campus, the same college that just this year has lost funding due to its declining ability to educate and retain students at an acceptable level set by the University of Arkansas system. There are serious issues in the city of Monticello. Streets, water, sewer as well as lack of opportunity and industry for our residents. Maybe, we should for just a moment pause and decide that instead of throwing money at things that will make people look away from the lack of basic services for our residents, we will throw money at things that will actually improve those basic services and therefore remove any need for covering up and diverting attention from what are the real issues. It is time to take control citizens. It is time to become citizens. Our elected officials work for us, but it is our responsibility to have a voice. We as citizens have a voice. We must use that voice or like all other things it will atrophy and become useless.

  4. David. Strickland says:

    No more taxes period

  5. Allenms10 says:

Can’t see it there is no economy in Monticello to support that kind of Center, it’s like the sports complex out on 278 West a waste of tax payers money, What they need to do is bring in some business to help us grow and raise the pay scale so you can support our families instead of people having to live pay day to pay day.
