City Agrees to Lease Part of Jordan Park to Private School Group

May 18th, 2012 by

The City Council was presented with a lease agreement for P.F. Mays & Associates, LLC for the proposed private school at Jordan Park during their regular meeting Thursday evening. Mayor Allen Maxwell reported that he had investigated what a reasonable lease would be on the Jordan Park property and, “What we got back was $300-$500 per month. I want the council to consider that because we don’t have to charge that much. I think we need to write what the City is going to charge on a monthly or annual basis… We came up with a number of $500 a year.”

Alderman Beverly Hudson said to the Council, “I think this school, if it’s successful, could be a wonderful thing for this community and for our young people, and I’d like to see us work with them to the very best of our ability.”

Patricia Mays agreed with Mrs. Hudson saying, “If it is successful it will be a tremendous benefit to this city.” “We are trying to keep the cost as low as possible so the families can attend as much as possible. It won’t be any cost to the City whatsoever for the building to sit there, so we’re just asking for a minimal lease amount.”

Alderman Sherrie Gillespie told the Council that she believed the $500 a year amount was reasonable, and made a motion to set it as such and to accept the proposed lease agreement. The Council unanimously voted yes.

This is a commemoration to Allen Maxwell and the City Council with this initiative with Dr. Patricia Ferrell Mays PhD. Dr. Mays and her Stellar Husband Vincent have an outstanding short and long term agenda that will greatly enrich and enhance the East End Sector of Monticello, AR and the City and Region in General. Again, Thanks Mayor Maxwell for your continued concern and actions for the betterment of Monticello, Arkansas

Bishop Wherry I agree with you. However I feel the council could have leased the property to Dr. Mays for much less than $500.00/yr. while this is about $45.00 monthly it is quite a lot for a business trying to get off the ground to better the community. I would have personally like to have seen $1.00/month to show that the council is trying to help business come here. That is one of the items discussed at the forum of council members at Holmes Chapel and if I remember correctly the ones running against the incumbents said to bring business here and to hire people from here you need to give back. This is a prime example where that could have happened but didn’t.

  3. Big whoop says:

I don’t feel that $500.00 a year is to much rather low. Is there going to be a cost to the families attending if so how much? Most troubled children’s families cant afford pubilc school. Is there a previous article about this school?

Thanks to Dr. Mays and her ambitions to bring something very positive into the community… When I listen to the video and personally spoke with Dr. Mays concerning her school, I had flashbacks of conferences I atend in the Northeast Region of the United States.. Also, it made me smile inside to know that a child can have an opportunity to have an education as well as some hands on experience in an interest that may benefit as well as a college degree. Some students are not college material and this school will better prepare them for an oppportunity that will make them feel inclusive to society.. Way to go Dr. Mays and all interested parties….
