Supporters of the proposed Convention Center, expected to e built on HWY 425 on UAM property, made therir proposal the the Quorum Court Monday night, announcing their intent to pursue a “rollover” of the 1/2 cnt libbrary tax, when that tax expires, probably in April or May.
The new tax will end when the pyment for the convention center and/or DMH surgry center expansion are paid in full.

A former UAM Vice Chancellor’ financial records where the topic of a recent UofA Trustee meeting.
Monticello native David Leonard, along with the male members of All Sons and Daughters, recently led a worship service at the MBSF at UAM.
The group began forming in 2009, where they worship at Journey Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Leslie Jordan of the group was not able to attend, so this was a unique event, even before you consider the personal ties that David has with Monticello.
The center was filled to capacity with students, alumni, and others who enjoyed the time of worship.
Governor Mike Beebe has named Charles “Cliff” Gibson III of Monticello to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees.
“Cliff’s appointment helps ensure a dependable voice on the Board for the U of A campuses in South Arkansas,” Beebe said. “His sound judgment and calm demeanor will serve the entire system of schools well in the coming years.”
Eight local business leaders and government officials visited our elected officials in Washington D.C.Tuesday and Wednesday, to discuss our local infrastructure needs.

Officers from the UAM arrested a professor of mathematics on October 30, charging him with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and threatening an officer.
Guy Nelson, a mathematics professor at the university was arrested at the college’s science center, where it took two officers to take him into custody.

Non-credit courses in topics ranging from self-defense to photography will be offered this fall by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Department of Community Education.

Classes for fall 2012 include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Dance Fitness plus Toning, Zumba, Shooting Portraits with Artificial Lighting, Self-Defense for Women, The Creative Camera, How to Take Better Photographs, Energy Saving Do It Yourself, Reading Like a Writer (to Become a Better Writer), Understanding State and Local Government, and Digital Image Processing Using Adobe Photoshop.

Senator John Boozman toured UAM’s agriculture dept., Thursday morning, as a part of his district-wide agri tour.
Boozman and his staff, along with UAM agri-business faculty visited various sites that are a part of UAM programs.
After the tour Senator Boozman led a brief meeting with those attending, where a wide range of topics were covered, including the Farm Bill, student loans, the drought’s effect on farming, future use of natural gas, and Heirloom tomatos.
One important aspect of UAM’s agri program is that “Most of UAM’s 100 ag majors are from this area, and want to remain in this area” after they graduate.

Brian Ramsey, assistant commissioner for communications of the Great American Conference, is returning to the University of Arkansas at Monticello as assistant athletic director for media relations.
Ramsey was UAM’s sports information director from 2007-11.
“We are pleased to welcome Brian Ramsey back to UAM,” said Athletics Director Chris Ratcliff. “Brian did an excellent job as sports information director and with his added administrative experience with the conference office, will bring fresh insight and new ideas to the Department of Athletics.”
