Siemens Facing Pending Lawsuits in Chicago for Water System Failure

The city of East Chicago hired Siemens Industry Inc. to install a membrane filtration system in their water treatment plant, located at 3455 Pennsylvania Ave.

The city contends in U.S. District Court documents that the company’s filtration system failed to meet a contractual requirement of 17.3 million gallons a day.

Carline Harden Satterwhite

Carline Harden Satterwhite was born June 16, 1932 to the late Dan and Katie Mae Harden in Lacey, Arkansas. She departed her life on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband the late (Honorary) Bishop H. W. Satterwhite, three brothers Johnny Lee, D. S., and Will Harden and two sisters Murl Jean Hendrix and Sulisteen Riley.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age at Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church in Lacey, Arkansas.
Carline worked at Burlington Industries for several years until retirement. She worked faithfully in her church.

Her memory will live on and be cherished by her children: Rosemary (Joe) Britton, Wanda (Chester) Hutson, Sandra (John) Cason, and Vernon (Yolanda) Smith. Eighteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, four great-great grand children, her sisters Claudia Handley and Larnie Mae Ferrell, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sis. Shirley Theus Hudspeth was born September 3, 1955;to the late Bro.Luther and Velma (Rawls) Theus in Salt Lake City,Utah. One brother, Sherman Theus and a set of twin proceeded her in death. At the young of 9 years old, the family moved to Wilmar, Arkansas.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd Edward Hudspeth and to this union two children was born.

She attended Wilmar High School where she graduated in 1973.

She confessed Christ at an early age in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. O.H. Harding.

She worked at Burlington Industrial for 10 years and later Bradley County Hospital and Area Agency until her health began to fail.She loved to fish,cook,shop, and spend time with her children,grandchildren and friends. She was a very special person and if you were ever around her you never forget her smile.

She leaves to cherish her memories, one son;Vernon Wendall Hudspeth, Monticello, Arkansas;one one daughter Lontillda Shanise Hudspeth of Little Rock, Ar. Two special granddaughters, Chantelle, and Shylamonte George of Little Rock, Arkansas.Three brothers;Eddie James Rawls of Spannaway; WA Bobby Theus, of Lake Village Arkansas;Johnny Theus, of Atlanta,Georgia.Very special friends Clarance Daniels,Dirk Parham,Valerie and Evanglina Carr. Mrs. Marilyn Lou Grantier, 69 of Monticello, AR, died Monday, January 20, 2014 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, AR. She was a native of Hot Springs, AR and a resident of Monticello for the past 15 years. She was a homemaker and was of the Assembly of God faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest “Amos” and Wonda Edwards Standiford, She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, John Grantier, one son, Johnathan Grantier of Monticello, AR, two daughters, Chell Lenz of Hermitage, TN & Shannon Grantier of Monticello, AR, three sisters, Earnestine Ware, husband Travis of Pearcy, AR, Betty Sroope of Hot Springs, AR, Carolyn Harrison, husband Dale of Bella Vista, AR, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.

Hazel Joan Pickens Leonard age 76 of Tyro, Arkansas, passed away on August 19, 2013

Joan was born December 29, 1935 in Peck, Kansas to Homereis and Murriel Hamilton Pickens.

Joan married Harold Raymond Leonard of Tyro, Arkansas, on September 1, 1956 in Wichita, Kansas.

She was an active member of the Monticello Church of Christ. She served as the leader of daughter Cindy’s Girl Scout Troop #33. For many years Joan and Ray enjoyed participating in square dancing with various local groups. Joan retired from The Mad Butcher grocery in Dumas after 25 years of dedicated service. Upon retiring Joan and Ray began traveling all over North America in their travel trailer. Family was always very important to Joan. She loved her grandchildren and many times loaded up those in Arkansas to go visit those in Colorado.

Joan is preceded in death by her father, Homereis Pickens; mother, Murriel Hamilton Burrows; step-father, Jake Burrows; brothers, Keith and Dale Pickens; and grand-daughter, Sharon Gillespie.

She will continue to live through her family, husband, Ray Leonard; children: Mona Still of Hope, Arkansas; Cindy Thornton of Kyle, Texas; Donald Leonard of Springfield, Colorado.

8 grandchildren and 4 great-grand children and a sister: Vera Pickens Warren of Wellington, Kansas.

zVergie Hart Reeves, 94, of Fayetteville passed Thursday, August 8, 2013 in Fayetteville. She was born January 15, 1919 in Wilmar, Arkansas the daughter of John and Edith Measel Hart.

She was a member of Greenland First Baptist Church and sold Avon for many years.

Preceded in death by her husband, Lee R. Reeves, 1~ son, Roy and wife Sharon Reeves and 1~daughter, Martha Killian, 2 -sons in law Philip Peterson and Don Worrell.

Survivors, 1~son, Wesley Reeves and wife, Debbie of Wilmar, AR; 4~daughters, Vergie Peterson of Murray, KY (husband, Philip, deceased), Betty Worrell of Monticello, AR (husband, Don, deceased), Laura Keeney and husband, Ed of West Richland, WA and Margaret Mann and husband, Mike of Fayetteville, AR; 1 son in law, Melvin Killian of San Antonio, TX; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1great-great-granddaughter.

Tally Kilgore made his Journey home complete at 1:00AM Tuesday morning. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 62 years Helen Kilgore and daughter Sharon Lewis. He leaves behind six wonderful daughters, five sons as well as a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Leo Jackson

Leo S. Jackson died Friday, April 19th.  Born April 22, 1932 in Wilmar, Arkansas to the late James “Jim” Jackson and Clara Chavis-Jackson, Leo found that he had a gift when he started out working with his father.  He was a very well-known carpenter throughout southeast Arkansas and began his entrepreneurship over 50 years ago building houses, cabinets and room addition anything a person could think of.
 
He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and rededicated his life back to Christ under the leadership of Rev. Jessie Washington and was a faithful member of St. James A.M.E. church in Wilmar until his health failed him.  Although he couldn’t attend church he always tuned in and listen to Bishop G.E. Patterson every Sunday.  Leo is preceded in death by his brothers James Edward Jackson, Alberta Walter Jackson, James Walter Jackson and his sister Madeline Jackson and his first wife Rosie Lee Jackson. 
 
He leaves to cherish is memory, his devoted wife Charlie Mae Smith- Jackson; four sons Gregory Reid (Bennie), Kenneth Smith Sr., Kevin L. Smith, Nick Smith all of Monticello;  three daughters Charlotte Smith, Jo Ann Trotter of Monticello and Toasha Davis of Taylor, MI; three brothers, James Travis Jackson of Kenosha WI, Curley Lee Jackson of Wilmar,  and Lester Marvin Jackson of Stockdale, TX;  two sisters Odessa Winfield of Chicago, IL and Patricia Ann Douglas of Wilmar.  He leaves a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends that will cherish his precious memories forever.

Mrs. Anna Mae Jordan, of Monticello, died March 22nd at the age of 92. A native of Lacy, she was born to the late Minnie Spencer-Fausett and Lester Daniels on May 4, 1920. Mrs. Jordan is preceded in death by her husband Thomas C. Jordan, Sr. and one daughter.

She leaves to cherish her memory nine children: Robert Davis, Wanda Jordan-Wilson, Ray Jordan Sr., and Minnie Jordan-Ellis of Monticello; Paul E. David of Queens, NY; Thomas C. Lenora McCullough, born Oct. 2, 1919, died peacefully in her home with family members at her side on March 16, 2013 at the age of 93. She was the eldest of two children born to J.W. Everett & Jennie B. Dodds. She retired from Alameda County Fairmont Hospital in San Leandro, CA in 1982.

Donna Scarbrough Bittle, 57 of Monticello, died January 29, 2013.  Donna was born in Dumas on June 21, 1955 the daughter of the late, Dewey Scarbrough, Jr and Polly McGohan. She attended St. Marks Catholic Church in Monticello and was employed by JRMC as a Registered Nurse. 

Survivors are husband, Bobby Bittle of Monticello, daughter, Rae Bittle of Berkeley, California, step children, Bobbie and Austin Bittle of Beebe,Arkasnas and four brothers, David Scarbrough of Star City, Todd Scarbrough of Dumas, Dewey Scarbrough of White Hall and Adam Scarbrough of Ft. Hood, Texas.

Rebel Smith Curtis age 45 of Dumas, AR passed away on January 19, 2013 in Dumas. She was born July 8, 1967 in New Orleans, LA to Clifford Joseph and Patricia Bryant Smith. She was a Christian and a Licensed Practical Nurse at Delta Memorial Hospital in Dumas for 7 years. Rebel received the Florence Nightingale Award in her graduation from nursing school.

She is survived by her parents, three brothers, Clay (Shelley) Smith Jr. of Geismar, LA, Max (Kelly) Smith of Bella Vista, AR and Dallas (Stephanie) Smith of Siloam Springs, AR, two sisters, Holly (Lloyd) Downen of Dumas, AR and Whitney (Jared) McDonald of Dumas, AR. She also has two sons, J.R. Smith of Dumas and Matthew Kyle Curtis of McGehee, and one daughter, Samantha Kiff of Dumas and two grandchildren, Anna Claire and Shevy.

Visitation will be Monday, January 21, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Abundant Life Church and services Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 11:00 am, Abundant Life Church in Dumas with burial following at Walnut Lake Cemetery, Rev. Four Brothers and one sister preceded him in death. She was preceded in death by one sister, Murl . Hendrix and five brothers, Johnny Lee, Will, D.S., Henry, and Eugene Harden.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Tyree; sisters, Larnie Mae Ferrell (Indianapolis, IN), Claudia Handley and Carline Satterwhite (Monticello, AR); three sister-in-laws, two brother-in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jessie was born to Ruthie Mae Boyd and the late Jessie Leon Boyd. She was born and raised in the Strangers Rest/Plantersville Community by her grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Julian and Hazel Gragg.

Jessie was preceded in death by her father, Jessie L Boyd, grandparents, Julian and Hazel Gragg, her step-father, G.W. (Donnie) Vincent. One brother, David Vincent and one aunt, on her mother’s side, Priscilla Watson.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Ruthie M. Lee Anner Bealer, age 66, of Monticello, AR departed this life on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Arkansas Hospice Center in Little Rock, AR. She was born on March 20, 1946 in Thebes, AR. She was an excellent aunt, sister, cousin, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Bealer Sr. and Mary Bealer; one sister, Virginia Bealer; and by one foster daughter Lanesia Davis.

Lee is survived by one brother, James Bealer, Jr. (Geraldine) of Monticello and one sister, Pearlene Bealer of Monticello, and one foster brother Collie Anderson (Carolyn) of Monticello, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Although Lee never had any biological kids of her own she helped to raise many. These include foster son, Myron Davis. Nieces, Nephews and Cousins: Roger Sr., Alphonso, Karen, Antionette, Wanda, Yvonne, Mark, Cherie, Andrea, and LaRhonda. Great nieces and nephews: Kristie, Barry “Tank”, Donzamion, Latrina, Zelda, Quanta, Shadonna, Teandra, Devonta, Denarius, Bambi, Roger Jr., Brandon, Quintella, Quarhonda “Pooh”, Quashondra “Suga Foot”, Deshondra, and Lauren “Punkin”.

Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 546 North Bailey Street, in Monticello, AR on Saturday January 5, 2013 at 11 am with Reverand Henry F. Richardson officiating. Services entrusted to Christian Brothers Funeral Home of Monticello,AR.

James Milton Washington

James Milton Washington, 62, passed away on July 30, 2012 at Drew Memorial Hospital. He was born November 26, 1950 in Lacey, AR to Addie Bea Washington and the late New Washington Sr. James was a heavy equipment operator for various employers prior to his failing health.

Mr. Washington join the Pentecostal Church in the Goose Hollow community of Drew County at an early age. A few years ago he met his soul mate, Barbara Pierce, who encouraged him to study the bible and attend church. Both James and Barbara obeyed the gospel of Christ and were baptized and added to the Church of Christ on January 2, 2011. The couple loved the Lord and desired to live according to the scripture was married on February 5, 2011.

He leaves to cherish her memory: loving wife Barbara Washington; four brothers: Eugen Washington of Kansas City, KS; Newt (Shriley) Washington, Jr. of Crossett; Bernard (Shirley) Washington of Fort Worth, TX and John (Kim) Washington of Monticello; six sisters Leola (Burdell) Roberts of Portland, OR; Margaret (Jimmy) Griggs of Bastrop, LA; Gracie (Bertis) Sawyer, Hazelene (James) McCray, Earlene (John) Middleton, and Joyce Darrough of Monticello, AR; and eight step-children: Janeessa Brown, Brandon Pierce, Kellen (Tan) Gray, Katrina Wade, Waymond Wade, Linda Ingram, Renee Wade, and Sharetha Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Newt Washington, Sr.; his brother and best friend Edward (Cook) Washington; brother, RB Washington; and two wives Dorothy Wade Washington and Maxine Ferrell Washington.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 5th at Kennedy Blvd Church of Christ in Monticello.

Johnnie Merrion “Cowboy” Hilburn

Johnnie Merrion “Cowboy” Hilburn 82, of Tillar, Arkansas passed away April 14, 2012. He was born July 23, 1929 in Bluffton, Arkansas to the late Thomas and Ocie Hilburn.

He was a member of Richland Baptist Church in the Richland Community and a retired farmer. His son Johnnie Hilburn and daughter Peggy Hood preceded him in death.

His wife Juanita Hilburn and two sons, Jimmy Hilburn of Monticello, Arkansas and Tommy Hilburn of Crossett, Arkansas, one sister Vivian Carter of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive him.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 17, 2012 from 6-8 pm at Griffin Funeral Home Chapel and services, Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Griffin Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 pm and burial following at Jefferson Cemetery with Rev. Heaven received a new angel…….Sara Frances McMahon Marter, age 61, of Monticello passed away Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 at the home of Jennifer and Randy Gavin after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Sara was born March 11th, 1951 in Monticello, Arkansas to Van Felton Sr. and Marguerite McMahon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Van and Marguerite, a very special friend, Mary Vining and by her husband of 40 years, Charles R. Marter, Sr.

Sara’s biggest pride was being “Granny”. She loved her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. A lot of the children that called her Granny weren’t related at all but that hardly seemed to matter. She enjoyed drawing and sketching, arts and crafts, taking pictures, researching family history, “her girls night out”, shopping, time spent with friends and she was an avid “facebooker”. She was raised as an Assembly of God; she loved the Lord Almighty and Jesus Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Gavin and husband Randy of Monticello, Krista Newkirk and husband Lester of Hot Springs, one son Charles Marter, Jr. and wife Andrea of Monticello. Six grandchildren; Heath Loveless, Cassidy Gavin both of Monticello, Jeffrey Newkirk of Hot Springs, Taylor, Trenton and Sydnee Marter all of Monticello, and Shannon Gavin of Rye. Two great-grandchildren Autumn and Noah Gavin of Rye. One honorary great-granddaughter, Micah Montgomery of Hamburg. One sister, Diana Shoptaw of Magnet Cove, one brother, Van McMahon, Jr. of Monticello, two brothers-in-law, James Marter and wife Debbie of Monticello, Don Marter and wife Donna of Monticello, two sisters-in-law Nancy Forrest Doggett of Monticello, Juanita Smith and husband Shine of Oak Grove, LA Sara left behind many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. A day-care of children that new her as Granny, and a very awesome group of ladies she called her best friends; Deed Shoptaw, Kim Reed, Lynn Marshal, Erma Lee Maness Foster, Dolly Rhodes Farmer, Jeannie Coffman, Sharon Hoppers Barnes and Lisa Coon. One dog, Sheba, her crazy cat, Dahli and his sidekick Toby.

A special thank you to Dr. Tim Simon, his staff at Monticello Medical Clinic, especially Mandy Hayden, Dr. Mark Gibbs and the nurses of the 6th floor oncology wing at Baptist Hospital and to Dr. Omar Atiq and his staff at the Arkansas Cancer Institute…….each and every one of you were so loving and kind.

James Roderic Dye, 57 of Heber Springs passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012 at his home. He was born Saturday, December 4, 1954 in Monticello, Arkansas. James was of the Baptist faith and served the country he loved as a life-long U. S. Marine. James was preceded in death by his father, James Roderic Dye Sr.

James is survived by his wife of the home, Janet Dye; his mother, Nellie Chambers; sons, Jimmy Dye, John Dye, Shawn Dye; a brother, Chuck Dye (Melanie); Sisters, Nancy Tranthan (James), Carolyn Taylor, Karan Mathis (Bryon), Jane Coleman (John), Jackie Williams (John); a grandchild, Steven Dye; nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives and many friends.
