Breakfast in the Classroom Pilot Project at DC
December 7th, 2012 by Drew Central SchoolsDrew Central is in day 2 of our pilot program for Breakfast in the Classroom.
This exciting new program allows kids to eat breakfast in the classroom during the first 10 minutes of class. We believe this will drastically reduce childhood hunger and allow everyone to start their day off right. The students and teachers are loving it! Mrs. Meek’s class is shown eating their breakfast and reviewing what they learned in math the previous day. The students were noticing the unit of measurement for the milk and orange juice.
Some teachers are also using this time to teach students how to read nutrition labels. Others are using this time as their reading time. Students sit quietly and eat while the teacher takes roll, gathers homework, and gets prepared for the day.

We do this is my classroom in Jonesboro. It is a huge success. Children get the chance to take a bit more time to enjoy their breakfast, visit with classmates and if teachers help seating, give the chance for all students to mingle and create a different social setting. In fact even our sixth graders have b’fast in the class.
Love to see growth at DC!
As a DC parent, I would just like to say that I loved this last week. My child was in one of the classes to pilot this program and it worked out great for us. Some mornings are rushed for us at home and by having breakfast in the classroom I know she will have time to eat a good breakfast. I hope they implement this full time soon.
This would be nice. My child doesn’t like going to the cafeteria at school for breakfast, and usually doesn’t want to eat at home either. She goes all morning with no food because she doesn’t want to eat first thing when she gets up and she doesn’t want to miss morning celebration. This sounds like a great plan. Keep up the good work DC!!!!!
