Drew County Circuit Clerk Beverly Burks of Wilmar has announced her candidacy for re-election in the 2016 general election. Burks, a Democrat, is currently serving her first year in office.

Prior to taking office in January, Burks worked two years as a deputy clerk in the Drew County Clerk’s office and served as editor of the Advance-Monticellonian for 14 years.

“The circuit clerk’s office plays an important role in the county,” said Burks, 48. “We are responsible for maintaining the records of criminal, civil, domestic relations and juvenile courts, along with recording deeds, mortgages, liens and other property-related orders and instruments. We also are responsible for facilitating a large number of child support payments and summoning juries. Dozens of documents come through our office every day and my deputies and I must ensure that they are properly processed and stored to maintain the integrity of each file. We work closely with attorneys, circuit judges and their staffs, the prosecuting attorney’s office, public defenders and law enforcement agencies to help the criminal justice system proceed as smoothly as possible.

“I appreciate the trust the voters placed in me last year and I have tried very hard to learn all the duties of the circuit clerk’s office and to make improvements,” Burks stated. “I would like to again ask the residents of Drew County for their vote and support.”

Burks is a graduate of Monticello High School and Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. She assists with a family-owned cattle operation and serves as church secretary and Sunday school superintendent at Wilmar United Methodist Church. She is secretary of the Wilmar Cemetery Association, a life member of the Junior Auxiliary of Monticello, and a member of the Seark Concert Association board. She has also volunteered with the Drew County Single Parent Scholarship Board and is a member of the Monticello Book Group and Monticello Women’s Investment Club. She is the daughter of Shirley Burks of Wilmar and the late James Burks.
