Attempted Captial Murder Youth Trio Appear in Court – 1 Mental Evaluation – 1 Bond Reduction Request
May 30th, 2012 by Joe BurgessTuesday, in the Drew County Circuit Court, the 3 juveniles, charged as adults for the attempted capital murder of a local man, and the theft of his truck and gun, all appeared before Circuit Judge Sam Pope.
The three, 17 year old Blake Smith, 15 year old Christoper Darden, and 15 year old Haley Thompson, remain in custody in a central Arkansas juvenile facility.
Darden’s attorney asked for Darden to have a mental evaluation, based on his additional charges of assaulting multiple correctional officers at White River Juvenile Center, since his arrest. The court approved the request.
Blake Smith had his court date set for late July-early August, and his attorney will likely ask to severe the cases of the trio.
Haley Thompson’s attorney said she will possibly move to send her client’s case into the juvenile system, and them requested a bond reduction hearing. Thompson’s great-grandparents testified, as did two law-enforcement officers.
The witness that seemed to have the most effect was the transporting officer who was called by the prosecuting attorney to present the letter from White River Juvenile Center, reporting that Thompson had sharpened a toothbrush into a shank, which could be used as a weapon. The judge denied the requested bond reduction.
All three youth suspects were then transported back to Batesville.
