A&P Commission to Ask Council, “What do We Do wtth the $441,000, We’ve Collected?”
December 11th, 2015 by Joe Burgess
After city voters rejected the sales tax that would build a commmunity event cener, on Tuesday, the Advertising & Promotion Commission has nearly half a million dollars, and nothing to spend it on.
The A&P commission was formed several years ago to oversee the 3% motel tax, which was specificly intended to be spent on the convention center.
Now that there will not be an event center, the A&P has quite a bundle in the bnak, with no intended purpose to spend it on..
The group met, Thursday, and wisely agreed to bring it back to the Dity Councl as to what direction to go now.
As was stated in Thursday’s meeting, “The sole purpose of this tax was the event centeer. Now we need to see what they want us to do (if anything).”

Have you ever heard of keeping it till something comes up?? Just because you have extra, doesn’t mean you have to blow it.It will wait on you. GROW UP….
I know….how about refunding it back to the taxpayers! It was collected from every single person in Drew County and the city of Monticello, so give it back….that would be the most honest and sensible thing to do….
How about paving the streets of Monticello like you promised years ago with our tax money.
There are plenty of streets in this town that could use some repair!!
I fail to understand how this transpired. I fail to understand why funds were collected by the gov’t for an item not approved by the voters. This stinks like corruption.
here is a novel ideal, spend it on the people by fixing the streets and water pipes. that would be a start.
Give raises!!
Maybe – advertise & promote, Monticello & Drew county.
Get the water dept on line for Bill paying
Are you telling me that as a County Resident and not a City Resident money I spent in Monticello was used to advertise and promote the event center, an event center that I could not even vote on. I’m so surprised that our politicians and town leaders would do such a thing? Wonder who’s name would be over the entrance? What is the term, “No taxation without representation”. Does anyone really think they don’t have a plan on how to spend the money. They could try to promote the big MEDC “White Elephant” north of the fair grounds before the rust worms take it down. Maybe it could be used as office space or think tank for our city planners, oh wait is it in the city or county.
This was a 3% motel tax, charged to those renting motel rooms in Monticello. It would be next to impossible to refund the money to whom it is actually owed. The funds should be properly invested and allowed to earn interest until such time as the voters choose to build an event center.
Why not put it to good use and help finish the sports complex to include finishing the miracle league fields! Advertising and promoting something that gives back to the community and southeast Arkansas!
this is a prime example of how a lot of people have a lot to say about something when they know little of what they are saying it about. all 8 of the comments ive read so fare just makes me shake my head because they don’t have a clue of what they are commenting on.
Seems that the Motel tax needs to be eliminated. Good luck with that. And good luck to you taxpayers receiving anything back. Something is rotten in Monticello alright.
how is it that this committee was formed several years ago to oversee a tax which was specificly intended to be spent on the convention center that was just recently proposed to us the people of Monticello?
Spend it on something for the people that are not sports minded, like camp sites at the lake that would bring money into monticello. Not everyone needs a sports complex but would like to have something to do at home.
