The Drew County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement Colored People (NAACP) is excited to invite ALL Drew County high school students to become involved with the Drew County NAACP ACT-SO (Afro Academic Cultural Technological Scientific Olympics) program.
The acclaimed program showcases exceptional youth from all backgrounds in six categories: STEM, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Business, and Culinary Arts. You do not have to be a member of the NAACP but we encourage your membership with the Drew County NAACP Youth Chapter.
ACT-SO has attracted more than 300,000 contestants since its inception, from more than 200 cities across the nation. Nationals host more than 700 contestants.
The competition format is two-tiered, with Drew County students competing in local events and Gold Medal winners advancing to nationals. Students may select up to three competitions and are evaluated by leaders of industry, government, academia, and the arts. The program offers unparalleled networking opportunities and professional development at the local and national levels.
It was recently reported that Google.org provided a $3M grant to support ACT-SO’s expansion, and drive ACT-SO volunteerism among Google employees. Clarissa Pace, Branch President, stated, “This type of funding and volunteer support could make a great impact for the youth of our community who exemplify scholastic and artistic abilities. This will help them pursue their dreams far beyond our community and have access to mentorship.”
Notable ACT-SO alumni include John Singleton, Roy Hargrove, Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith, Anthony Anderson, and Kanye West.
The Drew County ACT-SO chair, Velinda Woodard, and committee members, Shakendra James, Constance Williams, and Joyce Williams, invite parents and children to attend the Kick-Off Meet and Greet on Saturday, August 28 from 12 to 2 pm. Hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be served. Chairperson Woodard stated she is very excited to lead the children of Drew County. She also stated that their committee is open for more volunteers and mentors. For more information, contact Chairperson Woodard at 870.224.2538 or dcnaacp6042.org.
