Video of Candlelight Vigil for Katlin Lidge

March 11th, 2011 by

A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night at UAM’s Weevil Pond for Katlin Lidge.  Katlin was a member of the Kappa Eta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. fraternity, and was planning to graduate in May.

Approximately 150 friends, fellow students, and other people that were a part of Katlin’s life attended the event, which included prayer, fond memories of Katlin, and a reminder that each individual should examine their own relationship with the Lord, since “God takes us when he feels the time is right, not when we feel the time is right.”

Funeral services for Katlin Lidge, age 25, are scheduled to be held at Revival Center, located at East Jackson and Pine Streets, Saturday at 1 pm, with viewing at noon.

Katlin’s obituary is posted here.

A close friend  shares this tribute to Katlin:

Katlin Lidge, 25, of Monticello, died Saturday evening as the result of gunshot wounds sustained in a domestic dispute, but the activities of Saturday Night only explain the last seconds of Katlin’s life.  They do little to explain the other 25 years and who Katlin was.

Katlin was not born in Monticello and he did not grow up in a traditional home.  He spent much of his formative years living at the Baptist Home and then lived with a friend’s family until graduation.  Drew County was truly lucky that Katlin chose to make Monticello his adopted home.  Katlin was the type of young man you couldn’t just meet and forget.  He was far too unforgettable.  He had an endearing smile and a laid-back way about him that made him easy to like, a pleasure to be around.

Katlin, along with Kappa Eta fraternity chapter, donating food and toys to Morning Star Church's program for the needy, last Christmas.

Katlin was a good student and a polite young man.  He may be best remembered by those in the community for his football playing.  He was indeed one of the best linebackers Monticello has ever seen.  It was not uncommon on a Friday Night to hear Katlin’s name announced a dozen or more times in a game.  And, even at away games where it is often hard to get recognized, Katlin’s name would fill the air every quarter.  With a name like Katlin, the announcers were sure to say it wrong most of the time, but Katlin never seemed to mind.  When asked about it, Katlin replied “Oh no ma’am (and it was always ma’am), “I’m just glad I’m doing something to get my name said.

Katlin graduated from High School in 2004 and went on to play football at UAM on a football scholarship.  After a while, Katlin decided to leave football and get a job.  He continued at UAM with a few breaks, but he was scheduled to graduate in less than two months. For those who had the benefit of knowing Katlin most of his life, it was a great accomplishment.

Katlin leaves behind a large family, those who were related to him by blood and those of us who chose to call him “brother”…”son”. If Katlin were here he would tell you all “thanks”, one more time, for your love, friendship and support.  Because Katlin never failed to say “Thanks”.

On a personal note, if I may.  I will miss seeing Katlin graduate in May.  I will miss him sitting with me at a Billie football game and watching the new “crop” of Billies grow.  We can try to make sense of what can only be described as senseless.  But, Katlin taught us some valuable lessons during his short life.  Katlin knew from personal experience that life was not always fair or equal or even.  He could have been angry or vengeful or sullen but, he was not.  Katlin would have done much for the world and now you and I must do what Katlin would have done.  It will not be easy.  It was not always easy for Katlin.

But, I hope that Katlin will be as proud of us, as I was of him.

Murder Victim Identified – Wanted Poster Released for Murder Suspect in Saturday Night Shooting Death
Posted March 7, 2011

The 10th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s office has released this  WANTED poster, in the investigation into the shooting death of a 25 year old Monticello man, Saturday night.

The murder victim’s name, Katlin Lidge, was released to the public this morning.

Police are searching for NICHOLAS JAMAL NIX, age 19, who was last known to live on Larkin Street, here in Monticello.

Nix  is 6’01”, with an estimated weight of around 165 pounds.

There is an active felony warrant issued for his arrest, charging him with First Degree Murder.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact the Monticello Police Department at 870-367-3411.

According to cout documents, Saturday night, at approximately 11:50 p.m., the Monticello Police Department received a 911 call of a shooting at Pilgrim’s Rest Apartments. Officers arrived and found 25 year old Katlin Lidge lying in the doorway of the apartment, with a gunshot wound to his chest. Lidge later died at the hospital from his wounds.

During a search of the apartment, officers found blood in several rooms and bullet holes in the walls. A .22 caliber pistol was also found during the search. Evidence at the scene was consistent with the story witnesses gave during interviews.

One witness told officers that Nix was upset over the constant fighting between his sister and Lidge. That same witness also saw the handle to a gun sticking out of Nix’s pants that night. Later that night, the witness heard Lidge, his girlfiend, and Nix in a bedroom arguing. There were several gunshots, and a black male matching Nix’s description was seen leaving the apartment through an open window.

Another witness was Lidge’s girlfriend. She saw Nix in possession of a pistol earlier in the night along with a box of bullets. She told officers that she was in the bedroom with Lidge and they were arguing. Nix came in and he and Lidge started arguing and scuffling. She saw Nix holding a pistol, and shooting several times. He then handed the pistol to her, and she hid the gun, while Nix ran out of the room.

We really need to focus on finding some kind of way to stop all of the violence in our community. We are losing too many young people. It saddens me that Katlin had to lose his life in this manner.

  22. Timothy Dunn says:

Rest In Peace Kat…..Gone but never forgotten, I cant still believe this happend to you, but im glad that you are in a better place..

  23. Sad says:

Why Kat? Why him? He was sweet caring loving hardworking intelligent the list goes on. He was not abusive or mean. He didn’t like violence. He always had something nice to say. I remember studying for algebra class and doin homework together. I remember our late night talks. I remember the private moments. Everything. Then life took us both in different directions. Not long ago we were talkin about my son and how much he looks like me. Why did someone have to take his life? Could people not be responsible adults and talk about the problems? I know tempers flare but was there a need to kill katlin? All couples have arguments but it should never lead to this. Kat u are a special man and I will never forget u.

  24. Angryatthe viloence among our people says:

S crazy how we can’t get alone I’d all Gods people will come as one to put an end to the violence. Black on black crime! Its growning out of hand seriously! We steadily losing our young people males to be exact! Now not only one family destoryed but several! Prayer is valuable! My heart goes out to Katlin’s family, friends, LB’s and those who knew him! He gone but he not forgotten! Let his memory live on! Rest In Love And Peace

  25. sue says:

    it is praying time.

  26. A Friend says:

RIP KAT. LOVE AN MISS U MANN

  27. A GOOD BUDDIE says:

I DIDN’T KNOW YOU THAT VERY LONG BUT IN THAT TIME YOU WERE A JOYFUL SOUL THAT ALWAYS MADE ME SMILE….EVEN THOUGH IT SADDENS ME TO ACCEPT YOUR GONE, IM JUST HAPPY YOUR IN A BETTER PLACE! YOU DIDN’T DESERVE TO LEAVE THIS EARTH IN THAT MANNER BUT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND THE KAPPA ETA FAMILY…..STRUT/SHIMMY ON KAT…R.I.L

  28. Kenneth K. Trotter Jr. says:

I played football with Katlin my Senior of high school when he was just a sophomore. He had a tenacity and drive that I tried to emulate. When I lost all the weight to join the Marines, he congratulated me a few weeks before I left for Boot Camp. Katlin had a wonderful personality and was a helluva teammate. It saddens me that something like this happened to him. As a Marine, I expect to get called up at any time to go fight overseas one day. It’s my job. We fight if and when we have to. But I never expect friends back home to get killed just living their everyday lives. It boggles my mind when this happens, especially in Monticello. But no place is immune. My heart goes out to Katlin’s family. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I pray that the person responsible is quickly caught and justice can be served for Katlin. Rest in peace, my friend. Rest in peace.

  29. ryan says:

if anybody knows when and where the funeral arangments are please let the community of Monticello know. thanks.

  30. My prayers go out to the family of Katlin Lidge!!

  31. Nana says:

What a waste of young lives. Two families destroyed–the victim’s and the perpetrator’s. It’s all so senseless and stupid. Carrying a pistol doesn’t make you a man–it makes you a potential murderer…What happened to the days when men would settle their arguments with their fists, if they wanted to get physical? When are our young people going to start using their heads instead of their trigger fingers?

  32. friend from the past says:

RIP YOU HAD A BEAUTIFUL HEART A REAT PERSONALITY YOU WILL BE MISSED SO MUCH AND IN LOTS OF PEOPLES PRAYES WE LOVE U KAT..

  33. Angel 08 says:

This is so stupid that a young man had to lose his life over some dumb chick!!! Now this chick is still living and another young man is gone over what??? Since she hide the gun, she should be charged also, especially after hiding it. This world is coming to an end…so much stuff going on that is taking innocent lives. I’m with fed up citizen all the way!!!

  34. Kappa Alpha Psi LB says:

Katlin Lidge funeral arragements will be held at Revival Center located on 311 South Pine Street in Monticello Arkansas. So lets all get together to celebrate his homecoming to the Lord. God Bless and lets please pray for the family and friends during this hard time. Thanks

  35. upset friend says:

Katlin was my homie, this lil young punk had no right to kill him..The police better found him!!!!

  36. friend says:

kat i will miss u so much…we were close wen i was at uam and even afterwards u kept n touch i remember u n classes n tha halls at parties and even just hanging out…this was such a senseless murder….keep ur angel wings over me…love u and shimmy on through them pearly gates for me

  37. shacora harris says:

mane that was mess up what that dude did to kat he was a good person neva did nothing to nobody even kno i dont kno him like that i hope they catch that dude… R.I.P KAT…

  38. This is so sad. I am praying for the family of this young boy, and for peace in our city. I pray there be no retaliation on the street, but justice through the system. Our hope is in God, not in man. Lord help us.

  39. Andres Bacon says:

One of the coolest younger cats I knew… Truly missed by all Katlin.

  40. TearsOfSorrow 870 says:

Right now my eyes are in tears..But I know that the Lord will give me strength. I can just see his face and his smile.. and how he always hug me so tight when he seen me. Katlin was a good friend, brother, and student. He was never a stranger to anyone. My prayer goes out to his family and to the Brothers of Kappa Eta, keep your heads held high and pray for strength because the Lord will always be there for you when no one else will, and remember all the good times that you all had together.
REV 21:8 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes…….
RIP Katlin Ridge 6/29/85-3/5/11 U WILL TRULY BE MiSSED

  41. Heartbroken says:

It’s simply so sad that the gf is on fb explaining how she watch him take him last breath and not anyone else…this isn’t anything to brag about… I’m truly devastated..and words can’t explain! Ready for justice to be safe and (all) suspect must come foward in the matter..yea one man pulled the trigger but two brains were aware of the prior act even if it means knowing he had a gun, hiding it and giving him time to escape!!! No who I’m I to point fingers? (no one) but one thing for sure investigators need to look more into it and do there job well as trained…they say take 6 months minding ut own business and another 6mnths staying out of someone else’s! Two grown ppl arguing has nothing to do with a third party unless called for assistance and I’ve lived in Monticello for yrs and know 911 works just as fast for an argument just as well as for a gun shoot wound!!! Young ppl grown up this life isn’t promised forever and these senseless mistake isn’t always the answer! You would’ve been just as much as a man calling mpd to assist w the argument rather than using a gun and taking this young man life! Now you running! For what? This is Arkansas you will get caught!! And that sister of yours should speak about ur where abouts!!! You’re only 19 you couldn’t be that far!!! That ole co

  42. Heartbroken says:

..conscious of yours want let you run much further! May u surrender knowing what’s best! You did the crime now man up and serve the time! May god bless the lidge family, brothers, and friends! You will truly be missed Katlin Lidge

  43. Lilah Blu says:

It sadden me to know that such tragic events continue to plege
our families and loved ones. People tend to forget its not just a lost for the victim’s family it’s a lost for the criminal’s as well, both families will now endure saddness for the rest of their lives and will have to remember such a horrifiying day. Justice will only be served when the person whom has commited the crime is placed before God himself, Prision is only there to remove the person form commiting a crime outside its walls nothing will truly stop the person from not only commiting sin, but another crime as well. Anger is such a vehemently strong emotion and its a deadly sin and this is why it is extremly important to understand how to control this emotion and not let it control you. Blessing to all and Peace within ones self.

  44. Kelly says:

Katlin was my dear friend. I love this guy so much. The only reason he was still in Monticello was to double major and better himself, and now this… I wish so bad that I could see him walk across that field in May. He had a promising future and now all of that is gone at the hands of an ignorant young boy. If anyone knows this young man or his whereabouts, I strong advise them to encourage him to turn himself in. I know that vengeance belongs to God, but many people may seek revenge. Honestly, I dont want this young boy to die, I want him to stay alive so he can suffer the consequences of his actions. I know that God can punish him a lot better than we can. Death would be his easy way out. I want him to suffer emotionally for what he did to my/our friend.

  45. Ashley says:

This breaks my heart an innocent man gets killed over stupidity!! Katlin was a wonderful tender hearted guy that would do anything for you n for some lil’young dude that had no morals m wasn’t raised right had to use a gun to be a man I mean really he took an innocent mans life n to me deserves death penalty n the girlfriend should be charged for hiding the gun brother or not he killed someone n it isn’t right but I’ll leave that to God to take care of!! My heart goes out to Katlins family n I’m so sorry they have go thru such horrible tragic of losing a sweet good hearted son!!!!!!!!

  46. A HS classmate says:

The funeral will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Revival Center Church. Viewing will be at 12:00.

  47. Ms. Russellville says:

This is such a tragedy. My heart goes out to Katlin’s family, friends, Kappa Eta, and his LB’s. I pray God will be with all of you during your time of need. It may be hard to believe today, but justice will be served. Keep praying, Stay strong, and let God’s Will be done.

    R.I.P Katlin!

  48. Smh says:

So sad that this had to happen! Both families my heart n prayers go out to you! Katlin was sweet. So was Nicolas n delisa! Noone knows why they where arguing and noone knows how their relationship was behind closed doors! So save the judging and bashful talkin for God. Hate that this had to happen the way it did! Rip Kat

  49. Tyesha S. says:

I knew Katlin from high school when I spent a lot of time in Monticello. I then had a college class with him at UAM. Over the years we kept in touch through fb while I was away. Just a month ago, I saw Katlin and he gave one of the best hugs because he was such a sweetheart. My heart is heavy that a good man is gone and that his life was taken at the hands of another human being. I pray for each and everyone of us that knew Katlin! His life was short lived but oh, his spirit shall live on through us! Look to the hills from which cometh our help…the time is NOW to turn to God and not man. Vengeance is mine saith the Lord! Anger is such a dangerous emotion. I pray for strength, comfort, peace, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom for us all! To his family, frat brothers, and friends: be strong and stand on faith! Let God have his way! Katlin, I’ll always love you my friend so RIL Kat Daddy! And ppl please pray for BOTH families and all parties involved!

  50. Heartbroken says:

Before you’re born your day to leave this earth is already assigned..so anger isn’t the response for this matter/emotions…it’s justice..yes before god and the courts it shall be served!!

  51. Lou Lambert says:

Let’s take the time to pray for the families on both sides. Be careful of the words expressed, shared or proclaimed during these times. We don’t know where we will be tomorrow or even what are familes may have to endure. Lets be sensitive and prayerful. If each of us will strive to be a better person, then that is all that it will take. May God Bless each of you is my prayer.

  52. Jordan says:

The family is in my prayers. God bless you Kat

  53. keesy says:

I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing this young gentleman, but I am really saddened by this. It’s very rare when you hear nothing but good things about a person. May he RIP!!! Emotions are a powerful thing and one must control their emotions because things can turn real bad real quick!!! To the young people, let Katlyn be an example/inspiration for you to try to stay postive, pursue your dreams, and overcome obstacles in your life. Peace be unto you!!

  54. KAY says:

I am so very sadden to read about such a lost.
Ladies and men talk it over or leave don’t KILL. I PRAY FOR BOTH FAMILES AND EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD because we don’t know when it will or could be us or our family. Much love and God Bless each of you

  55. Arkadia (kadi) says:

I laughed at your jokes, I always saw you and Swan you guys were an inspiration to me. Since Ive moved I still got messages from you, and I still talked to you and Rob from time to time. Just know you are in my life spirtually. Love you and I have deepest sympathy for the Lidge family, as well as Kappa Eta (non greata)…LOVE YALL!

  56. Monica Weaver says:

I will never forget Katlin, he helped me tutor in the after school program while he was in high school. He was always so polite and understanding with other students. My prayers are with his family and his “extended Billie” family. He will always hold a special place in my heart!! Rest in love Katlin.

  57. Drew county native says:

FIRST OF ALL, JUST LET ME SAY THAT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH BOTH FAMILIES. KATLIN WAS FRIENDS WITH MY BROTHER WHOM HE PLAYED FOOTBALL WITH AT MONTICELLO HIGH SCHOOL AND ALL THE TIMES I’VE SEEN KATLIN OR BEEN AROUND HIM HE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE AND HE WOULD ALWAYS I MEAN ALWAYS SPEAK (MOST OF THE TIMES WHEN I WOULD COME HOME I WOULD SEE HIM IN WAL MART EVERY TIME, IT NEVER FAILED..LOL )
BUT HE WAS A VERY LIKEABLE, RESPECTFUL, AND COOL YOUNG MAN AND A VERY GOOD ATHLETE!!! MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND KATLIN U MAY GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!!!

  58. Darquisha says:

  61. Tee says:

Katlin it’s too hard to put all of this together, so i want try..what i will do i stay strong and remember all the moments we shared and just be thankful that I had the chance to know you. You were my sis classmate I only went to hs w u a year bt when I did come home I got the chance to c u! Gosh, I’m really gone miss you Kat-you left us way too early but we know it was all for god call no matter te circumstances on how u left us we have to realize that god is god and bigger than all things and Satan will try his best ro stick around and tell us to go for revenge bt that’s not the way to go and I know if this was visa versa u wouldn’t consider that..so my friend I say today may u rest in peace- may god wrap his arms around your family during this time as well as friends and kappa eta! I love you!

  62. Suzanne says:

The first time I me Kat was at work. He came in and was asking for his check. He said I’m here to pick up my check mam. I said Please dont call me mam it makes me feel old. He said Yes Mrs Leonard. I looked him and said not Mrs either, that makes me feel even older, with a smile. He just stood there not sure what in the world to do now. He just couldnt do it, and I got mam’ed all the time. He was never with out a smile, or a kind word. He was always there to offer help in what ever needed to be done. My prayers go out to everyone who knew what a special person he was. RIP Kat!! You will be missed.

  63. Shelia Lucas says:

I am writing this with a heavy weight on my heart. I didn’t know Katlin that well, but he always spoke to me with an infectious smile and polite mannerism. This is an unfortunate and hideous incident to happen to an outstanding and overachieving young man, namely Katlin. The many obstacles and hurdles he overcome in his short lifetime and to still succeed with an air of perseverance and humility. I hope this is a wake-up call to all young people of this community and Katlin’ legacy be a role model to all ages. Rest in peace sweet one, “JOB WELL DONE”!!

  64. Barbara Benton says:

From time to time, Katlin attended Kennedy Boulevard Church of Christ. I didn’t know him personally, but my daughter, Patrah did. She had just spoken to him a week before he died and told him that she was coming back to Monticello the weekend he was murdered. She spoke of his kindness and that smile that everyone keeps writing about. Many have been affected by his death. Unfortunately, we all have to deal with death in our lifetimes. It is never easy, but it is reality. As I continue to read about this young man’s death, I’m reminded of the senseless black on black crimes that are in the headlines too often. But suddenly a sweeter reminder overshadows the sadness that’s replaced with a song one of my relatives used to sing- “May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me.” There is a stanza that states: When I’m laying in dead in my grave there is nothing to be said. May the work I’ve done speak for me. Apparently his work is speaking loudly. God bless all of the people who have been affected by his death.

  65. KAY says:

God bless everyone who is touched by this ordeal. But I would ask a special blessing upon Jamal Nix, who is only 19 years of age. here is another young Black man lost in this world of sin. I pray for him and his family. Katlin is resting now in peace. Jamal is in a world of fear. To Jamal and his family PSALMS 103 vs 2-4 says Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeeneth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies. I pray for you ALL!

  66. Meritza Jones says:

I will echo what others have said. Kat was a good, down to earth guy. I still can’t believe this is real. My prayers will continue to go up for all who have been affected. As Ms. Benton mentioned, the black on black crimes are absolutely senseless. What is it going to take for us to wake up and realize we are only hendering ourselves? It’s just as easy to make peace as it is to take a life and, in return, have to live in agony regretting the choice(s) we made.

  67. betty says:

It’s a crying shame this happened. A young man took another young mans life and now his life as he knew it is over. It sad that it happened this way when it could have been resolved in a differant matter. May God Bless these families.

  68. KAY says:

May God Bless “Kat” family and friends.

  69. Laura Wise says:

So very sad for both families. We need to being praying for our youth every day, seems so many have gone astray. Both families will be in my prayers.

  70. deundra says:

  71. Tim Harper says:

I HAD THE HONOR OF BEING PART OF YOUR FAMILY. I WILL MISS YOU LITTLE BROTHER, BUT NOT FORGET YOU, AND LOVE ALWAYS. I SEE YOU AGAIN, UNTILL THEN R.I.P.

  72. A human being says:

I hope justice is prevailed and ALL guilty parties are punished to the fullest! Katlin did not deserve this. RIL Katlin, you are truly missed and loved by many <3

  73. A human being says:
