Investigation & Audit Looking for Funds in Monticello District Court

June 11th, 2008 by

MonticelloLive recently received a news tip about an investigation taking place in regards to unaccounted for money in the Monticello District Court.

District Judge, Ken Harper, told MonticelloLive, “no allegations of wrong-doing have been made or charged.  The courts books are undergoing an audit.”

Judge Harper explained that the court involves two sets of records.   The city’s records are being audited by Searcy and Associates, while the Drew County court financial records are under audit by the Arkansas Dept. of Legislative Audit.

“A concern has been raised as to the proper credit of monies paid for fines”, the judge continued.

State police investigators referred all questions to Prosecuting Attorney, Thomas Deen.

In an interview with Deen this morning, he told MonticelloLive, “it appears there were some unaccounted for funds in the (Monticello) District Court.”

Deen, in turn, contacted the Arkansas State Police requesting an investigation be done.  Deen said that as of this morning, the investigation is still pending, awaiting information to be returned to his office.

Judge Harper said, “appropriate steps have been taken to address the situation, but I’m not at liberty to address personell matters.”

He closed by adding, “If there is evidence of wrong-doing, we’ll take appropriate action at that time, based on information gained from the audit process.”
