City Awarded Flood Mitigation Grant

September 14th, 2023 by

Flash flood flooding

According to Monticello Mayor Jason Akers, a flood mitigation grant applied for in May of this year by the Mayor’s Office was awarded this week to the City of Monticello by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management.

The project, which is to repair long standing drainage issues in the Jackson/ Conley Street area of Godfrey Ditch, is estimated to cost $299,996, with the grant award paying $224,997.

The project was originally listed as the 7th priority project on the cities infrastructure plan, but as other drainage projects have been completed or are being completed this year, the Jackson/ Conley project has moved closer to being addressed.

According to Mayor Jason Akers, “We face some challenges with drainage due largely in part to homes being built in flood zones and decades worth of trash and garbage being thrown in drainage ditches. So we have to clean them out before we can even start to fix them. We also have old and buried metal culverts that have been collapsing for years and negatively affecting drainage. But it’s getting better every week. The Mayors office, Public Works and the City Council are working together and the progress shows that”.

At the August council meeting, the council approved the Mayor’s application for another $500,000 in grants for infrastructure.
