According to Monticello Police Chief Jason Akers, MPD and 1st Baptist Church of Monticello recently completed the first Senior Security Course. The course is a joint endeavor between MPD and First Baptist that is designed at providing financial, physical and home security tips, training and insight to Monticello’s senior citizens and elderly residents.

The course covers common telemarketer scams and fraud attempts that target senior citizens and retirees as well as personal safety and security measures that may be useful to those who are older and may be living alone.

Chief Jason Akers says that the program also familiarizes residents with the capabilities and operations of the police department and provides a personal point of contact for them if they need help from law enforcement if they have identity theft, fraud or safety concerns.

Akers also stated that roughly 57% of telemarketing scams target the elderly and roughly 7 out of 10 senior citizens have been targeted at some point by telemarketing scams. Our communities senior citizens are one of our most cherished commodities and MPD will do everything we can to protect them.

Pastor Kelly Jones and his staff at First Baptist also provided lunch for attendees.
