Watson Earns Fellowship at UIUC
September 27th, 2021 by Joe BurgessDarrien Watson is a second-year Ph.D. candidate in the Recreation, Sports, and Tourism Department (RST) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
During his time at UIUC, he has been awarded a coveted fellowship award from the Graduate College. His research interest is leisure among race and ethnic groups in society. His research interest also involves the influence of culture in African American leisure and the navigation of barriers for diverse ethnic families.
Darrien was recently elected to the RST Graduate Committee as the Ph.D. representative. The Graduate Committee is comprised of esteemed faculty and graduate students tasked with the decisions that impact the department’s graduate program.
He also has joined the Diversity Research Lab, which is a collective of researchers that study issues concerning race, ethnicity, gender, and marginalized populations.
Upon gaining his doctorate, Mr. Watson plans to be a professor at a research university. Mr. Watson aspires to utilize his research to be an advocate for recreational opportunities for underserved populations and contribute to increasing diversity in higher education.
His parents are Charles and Eunice Watson.
