Train Hits Overturned Log Truck, East of County Line
May 27th, 2021 by Joe Burgess
Just before 4 AM, Tuesday morning, the driver of this unloaded log truck was attempting a sharp turn in a curve when the truck overturned on to a Union Pacific railroad track, on Highway 159 near Masonville, just a couple miles across the Drew County line, towards McGehee.
McGehee Fire & Rescue quickly responded, trying to extricate the log truck driver from the overturned vehicle, when they heard and oncoming train breaking a few hundred yards away from the blocked railroad tracks.
The rescue team had to stand back, as the slowing train collided with the log truck, with the driver still inside. The train came to a complete stop, several feet after impact, clearly saving the drivers life, by braking as quickly as they did.
The rescue squad was able to remove the trapped driver through the passengers window, where he was transported to the local hospital, treated and released.
Arkansas State Police are investigating the crash.
