Crystal Halley Named UAM Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

October 12th, 2020 by

HallyUAMUniversity of Arkansas at Monticello Chancellor Dr. Peggy Doss announced today that Crystal Halley has been named the UAM Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Halley graduated from UAM Summa Cum Laude in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She earned a Juris Doctorate from the William H. Bowen School of Law at UALR in 2007.

Halley has served as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs since January when Dr. Doss, who previously served in the role, was named chancellor. Halley has held leadership roles in the academic affairs division for more than a decade. She served as director of academic advising for 11 years before her appointment as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2018 and was later promoted to associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. Halley has served vital roles in the development of student success and retention efforts including the UAM Degree Pathways initiative and the development of professional academic advisors in the Office of Academic Advising. Her efforts, along with those of the UAM faculty and staff, have resulted in noticeable improvements in retention, including a retention rate among first-time freshmen that is 9% higher than last year.

Halley served as an adjunct instructor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences teaching courses in government, law, and mock trial and also taught Leal Environment of Business for the School of Business. In addition, she taught Legal Research, Criminal Law, and Judicial Process for the University of Arkansas System eVersity. Halley won the USDLA Best Practices Bronze Award for Distance Earning Programming in 2016 for Legal Research with Adam Peterson.

Chancellor Doss expressed her appreciation of the UAM search committee’s work during extraordinary circumstances presented by the pandemic. “Ms. Halley is recognized as a respected leader with a strong commitment to the success of our university and the students we serve,” said Doss. “She understands and appreciates the mission of UAM and the importance of the institution to the region and the state, and will continue to be a valued team member as we grow an even stronger UAM.”

Halley will serve on the chancellor’s executive council and oversee matters pertaining to academic programs, resource allocation, faculty recruitment and retention, student retention, program assessment, accreditation, library services, and the office of the registrar. Halley is a native of McGehee and now lives with her husband and two sons in Monticello.

“It is a great honor to serve the institution as vice chancellor for academic affairs,” Halley said. “UAM has always strived to meet the needs of students through innovative program development and creative retention initiatives. I look forward to building upon those efforts.”
