Our school superintendents have their hands tied. Our schools remain open because the Arkansas Departments of Health and Education are following CDC guidelines. The CDC “School Decision Tree” for closing schools is based on the premise that adequate testing is taking place in the community. It still is not taking place. According to Governor Hutchinson, Arkansas can currently only perform 20 tests per day for the entire state. That is up from 5 tests daily the previous week! Thus, schools are being kept open when we have no idea how widespread the coronavirus is in our community. Arkansas has its first case of community transmission. Why not change the guidelines, close the schools and get the testing up to par? Then, reestablish the “School Decision Tree” once we have a well defined situation supported by adequate testing. I’d say the CDC clearly has the cart before the horse. Sigh!
