Old Burlington Rug Mill Condemned by City Council

A Resolution was presented to the City Council, and approved, to condemn the property of Monticello Recycling, located at 231 East Shelton. The building, estimated to be over 100 years old, originally served as a cotton mill, but is commonly known as the “old Burlington Rug Mill.”
The City property inspector, reported that this is the not the first time the property has fallen out of compliance with the City codes. The first time, in 2012, the property owner was able to bring it back into compliance.
The fire department also reported that in addition to trash and overgrown brush on the property, the building is out of compliance with fire codes, and has been for quite some time. The building itself is also in a bad state of repair, with holes in the roof and other structural problems.
The I nspector, Brian Rodgers, reported that he had received an unofficial estimate that brush and trash removal alone could cost in the range of $15,000, and that necessary repairs to the building could run in the range of $80,000. He also presented evidence to the Council that he had been sending letters and notices about this property since April, with no response.
The Council voted to condemn the property, specifically outside of the structure.
