City Council Hears Public Complaints about Godfrey Ditch & Creekwood Creek Flooding Homes – Considers City Cleaning Out Drainage Ditches – Video
August 28th, 2014 by Sarah SpencerCity Attorney Whit Barton addressed the City council, Tuesday evening, about the problem of creeks flooding in Monticello.
Mr. Barton stated he was asked last week whether the City can clean out ditches on private property. He responded that the answer is no, but under the right circumstances they can. If a creek or ditch is a significant part of the City’s drainage system, then it can be cleared by the City.
In addition to Godfrey Ditch and the Creekwood area, Ten Mile Creek and the creek that runs behind Western Pines Park are also major sources of flooding during times of heavy rainfall.
During the discussion, the questions as raised whether the problem is overgrown ditches, or if there is a bigger problem preventing rapid water drainage.
The mayor asked for the Council to give him authorization to look into the flood problems that are occurring in the city, and to formulate a plan to resolve the issue. The Council granted him that authorization.
